Connecticut ComiConn founder Mitch Hallock announced recently that next year’s event would be held at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. In addition to the spacious convention center that will house the convention the venue boasts a massive arcade, arena and a wide-range of shops, bars and restaurants.
As it has for the last several years this past August’s edition drew well-above expectations and also delivered one of the most enjoyable cons I have ever the good fortune of attending. As a native of Connecticut I can attest to the fact that Mohegan Sun is regarded as one of, if not the premier venue in the state and it would not surprise me in the least bit if last year’s record-breaking crowd of 15,000 once again doubles when the event moves in this year.
As we covered earlier this year, the event was a three-day celebration of peace, love and comic books that truly was bleeding cool from the Bat-Pack lounge to the Cosplay-infused Irish Pub to the needlessly epic Artist Alley including the likes of David Finch, Tom Raney, Neal Adams, Joe Rubinstein and George Perez. Literally everyone I spoke to had only positive things to say about the event, including Perez:
This was a wonderful event they did a great job and kept me very, very busy but I had a whole line of slave-drivers which is just the way I like it. The fans were friendly and I can’t expect more than that – it was wonderful!
Fittingly, just as last year’s rendition was the first con I had ever attended inside a hockey arena ComiConn 2015 will be the first one I attend inside of a casino. While I have no doubt Hallock will once again deliver an event that puts comic fans first while also appealing to geeks of all kind it is no doubt going to be a fascinating side-attraction to see cosplayers roaming around the roulette tables not to mention all the conveniently-located nightclubs and restaurants that will be opening up their doors for them. While NYCC and BCC may have delivered more pomp and celebrity what ComiConn delivered in heart more than made up for the lack of Birdman screenings and Kevin Smith as fellow-member of AMC’s Comic Book Men Ming Chen explained during last year’s event:
This con has a lot of heart…Mitch is a friend of mine so I can tell you he lives, eats and breathes comics. A lot of shows out there you can tell they like comics but they’re looking at dollar signs but not Mitch…this one you can tell, yeah they want to make a little profit but they’re in it for the love of the fans out there and that’s why I love being here.
Get Stoked True Bleeders! And if that isn’t enough to entice you to attend this event then maybe this video showcasing what wonderful people the cosplayers who attended last year’s show were for being such great sports when I played a little joke on them…don’t worry, I will absolutely find a way to top this next year.
