Antoine Fuqua is directing. The 1960 original, itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” starred Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. It centered on seven gunslingers who protect an oppressed Mexican village from a group of outlaws. The script was most recently reworked by John Lee Hancock, with “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto writing the previous version. Talks are still in the early stages, but sources say they are progressing. Pratt has become a hot property since his star-making role in Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” He has been weighing several offers over the past few months, including “Cowboy Ninja Viking” at Universal. He can be seen next in “Jurassic World.” He is repped by CAA and Mosaic. The news was first reported by Deadline.com.

Bennett most recently co-starred with Washington in the Fuqua-directed The Equalizer, and she just wrapped The Blunderer opposite Patrick Wilson and Jessica Biel, and Warren Beatty’s untitled film about Howard Hughes. Her reps at CAA and lawyer Dave Feldman are making the deal. In the pic, a town is taken over by a ruthless gold mining baron and his thugs. She plays the widow of a man who was murdered, and hires a bounty hunter to get rid of the baron and his thugs, and gives the bounty hunter enough money to pay six gunmen to help him in the cause.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/ethan-hawke-joining-denzel-washington-778557Ethan Hawke Joining Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt in 'Magnificent Seven' The move will reteam Hawke with his 'Training Day' co-star and director. Ethan Hawke is in negotiations to join what is shaping up to be an all-star cast of MGM’s remake of Western classic The Magnificent Seven, THR has confirmed. The move will reteam Hawke with director Antoine Fuqua and actor Denzel Washington, with whom Hawke worked on 2001’s police thriller Training Day. Chris Pratt and Haley Bennett, who appeared with Washington in Fuqua’s thriller The Equalizer, are also in the cast. The movie tells of a woman (Bennett) who hires a disparate group of gunslingers to protect her town from rampaging bandits. The cast of the 1960 original included Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and Robert Vaughn, among others. Hawke is coming off a busy awards season in which he garnered much praise — and an Oscar nomination — for his work in Boyhood. He also has several films in the can, including Ten Thousand Saints, which premiered at Sundance.

variety.com/2015/film/news/ethan-hawke-and-denzel-washington-reteam-on-magnificent-seven-exclusive-1201443743/Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington Reteam on ‘Magnificent Seven’ It’s been over a decade since Ethan Hawke, Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua patrolled the mean streets of Los Angeles in “Training Day,” and it looks like that team is looking to head to the Wild West for their next collaboration. Sources say the Oscar-nominated Hawke is in final negotiations to join Washington in MGM’s “Magnificent Seven” remake with Fuqua directing. Chris Pratt and Haley Bennett are also on board to star. The 1960 original, itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” starred Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. It centered on seven gunslingers who protect an oppressed Mexican village from a group of outlaws. The script was most recently reworked by John Lee Hancock, with “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto writing the previous draft. MGM is hoping the pairing of Hawke with Washington leads to the same success the two saw on crime drama “Training Day,” which overperformed at the box office and led to both men receiving Oscar nominations, with Washington eventually taking home the prize. Hawke is coming off his Oscar-nominated role in “Boyhood” and has several upcoming projects that include Andrew Niccol’s “Good Kill” and the docu he directed, “Seymour: An Introduction.” He is repped by CAA.

Byung-hun Lee is getting the role of Billy Rocks, and the South Korean star joins the Antoine Fuqua-directed ensemble cast led by Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio. Lee had showy turns in two G.I. The Magnificent Seven is produced by Roger Birnbaum and Todd Black with Walter Mirisch and Antoine Fuqua are executive producers.

deadline.com/2015/05/peter-sarsgaard-jason-momoa-magnificent-seven-1201430488/Peter Sarsgaard Signs On To Play Outlaw In ‘The Magnificent Seven’ As Jason Momoa Exits The MGM/Sony remake of the 1960 film The Magnificent Seven has found its bad guy. Peter Sarsgaard is in final negotiations to play Bartholomew Bogue, a robber baron whose hired thugs kill the husband of a woman who hires a group of mercenaries to take back the small town that has become Bogue’s stomping grounds. At the same time, the Antoine Fuqua-directed movie is shy one gunman as Jason Momoa has dropped out of the film that stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Haley Bennett, Byung-Hun Lee and Matt Bomer. Studio denies this but I’d heard Momoa just didn’t have enough to do, and not much to say in the film. He’s been a man of few words in jobs like Game Of Thrones, and he’s actually got a lot to say. He’s booked to play Aquaman, and I think that superhero talks to the fish. Roger Birnbaum and Todd Black produce and Walter Mirisch and Fuqua are exec producers. Sarsgaard is repped by WME, Authentic and Peikoff Mahan.
