Amazon Sets Premiere Date for Roman Coppola’s ‘Mozart in the Jungle’
Amazon will debut all 10 episodes of classical-music dramedy “Mozart in the Jungle” from executive producer Roman Coppola on Dec. 23.
The series will be available on the e-commerce company’s Prime Instant Video in the U.S., U.K. and Germany.
“Mozart in the Jungle,” based on the memoir of the same name by former New York Philharmonic oboist Blair Tindall, stars Lola Kirke (“Gone Girl”) and Gael Garcia Bernal (“Rosewater,” “Amores Perros”), pictured above right with Malcolm McDowell (“The Mentalist”). Series also stars Saffron Burrows (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Hannah Dunne (“Frances Ha”) and Peter Vack (“I Just Want My Pants Back”).
The dramatic comedy is set in Gotham’s classical music scene, centered on a young oboist Hailey (Kirke) who tries to navigate egos and eccentricities of a world-renowned orchestra and new conductor and enfant terrible Rodrigo (Bernal).
“Our customers will be immersed in a provocative and compelling world,” said Roy Price, VP of Amazon Studios. “Jason, Roman, Paul and John have brilliantly tapped into this microcosm brought to life by an unparalleled ensemble cast.”
Added Coppola, who is the son of Francis Ford Coppola: “Classical music has always interested me. By being part of this show I’ve been able to immerse myself in this fascinating world. I think the viewer will be equally as surprised and intrigued as I was with what goes on behind the curtain at the symphony.”
Series guest stars include McDowell, Bernadette Peters (“Smash”), Debra Monk (“Damages”), Wallace Shawn (“Gossip Girl”), Mackenzie Leigh (“General Hospital”), Nora Arnezeder (“Safe House”), Jerry Adler (“The Good Wife”) and John Hodgman (“Arthur”). Santino Fontana (“Frozen”) appears as Mozart himself.
“Mozart in the Jungle” is executive produced by Roman Coppola (“Moonrise Kingdom”), Jason Schwartzman (“The Darjeeling Limited”), Paul Weitz (“About a Boy”) and John Strauss (“There’s Something About Mary”). Series is co-executive produced by Alex Timbers, and produced by Michael Zakin and Caroline Baron. Weitz and Coppola directed episodes, along with Bart Freundlich, Adam Brooks, Daryl Wein, Tricia Brock and Daisy Mayer.
