The mystery also won the Best Film award at Tribeca in 2009 and was Iran’s official entry to the Academy Awards. But it has never been released in the U.S. because an earlier distributor went out of business. Farhadi won the Foreign Language Oscar for 2011′s “A Separation.” “About Elly” will open theatrically on April 8 at New York’s Film Forum, followed by a national release. The story centers around a group of college pals (two married couples and a brother and sister, along with three young kids) reuniting for a weekend outing by the Caspian Sea — including the titular Elly, a kindergarten teacher of one of the children. Elly suddenly vanishes, setting in motion a series of deceptions and revelations. Besides “About Elly” and “A Separation,” Farhadi is the director of “Dancing in the Dust” (2003), “Beautiful City” (2004), “Fireworks Wednesday” (2006) and “The Past” (2013). The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of Cinema Guild with Nasrine Medard de Chardon of DreamLab Films.
