Studiocanal Scores Worldwide Pre-Sales With ‘Robinson’
PARIS– Attending the AFM with a roster of fresh English-language projects, Studiocanal did boffo business with Ben Stassen and Vincent Kesteloot’s 3D family toonpic “Robinson Crusoe,” Stassen’s follow-up to “House of Magic.”
Studiocanal’s sales team, led by Anna Marsh, pre-sold “Robinson” nearly worldwide at the AFM, where it unveiled the first footage of the project with Stassen on hand to promote it.
Deals were signed for Italy (Notorious), Scandinavia (Svensk), Ex Yugoslavia (Blitz), Greece (Odeon), Thailand (IPA), Baltics (Acme), Israel (Forum), South Africa (Nu Metro), Singapore (Shaw), Czech Republic (AQS), Indonesia (PT Amero), Korea (Joy N Contents), Bulgaria, Romania and Bulgaria (Prorom), Poland (Kinoswiat), Iceland (Sam), Turkey (Fabula), LatAm (Imagem), Middle East (Salim Ramia & Co) and CIS (Volga).
Deals underscore the viability of Studiocanal’s focus on quality independent family entertainment which can feed the pipeline of distributors looking for an alternative to studio movies.
Studiocanal will release the film, which is produced by Stassen’s nWave Pictures, in France on Feb. 17, in the U.K. on April 8, Germany on March 24 and in Australia on March 31.
“Crusoe is already a brand. As with ‘Maleficent,’ you may think you know the tale of ‘Robinson Crusoe’ but here we’re telling you the true story behind it. Our film shows how Robinson really survived on the island, thanks to a hilarious family of fun-loving animals,” explained Marsh. “This story truly resonates with clients worldwide and speaks to parents as well as children.”
Marsh says another reason behind the large volume of pre-sales on “Robinson” is the worldwide success of Stassen’s last movie “House of Magic.”
A Chinese deal is in negotiations. Stereo 3D is still a big plus in territories like Korea, China and Russia. Marsh said the project had also sparked the interest of U.S. distributors.
At the AFM, Studiocanal also closed Canada (Elevation), South Korea (Dreamwest) and Greece (Spenzos) on another high-profile family movie, “Shaun The Sheep,” which is now sold worldwide — apart from the U.S.. And it completed sales on “Paddington.”
Other highlights on Studiocanal’s AFM slate include “We Are Your Friends” with Zac Efron and Wes Bentley (sold to Warner Bros.) and Luca Guadagnino’s psychological thriller “A Bigger Splash.”
