deadline.com/2014/11/scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark-movie-john-august-1201286808/John August To Pen ‘Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark’ For CBS Films CBS Films has tapped a new scribe to spin its Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. BAFTA-nominated John August (Big Fish, Frankenweenie, GO) will adapt the iconic book series by Alvin Schwartz that had children of the ’80s and ’90s hearing bumps in the night, penning a new script based on the best-selling spooky story collection. The three-book children’s series that’s sold more than 7 million copies worldwide began with 1981′s Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, continuing with More Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (1984) and Scary Stories 3: More Tales To Chill Your Bones (1991). The collection of folk tales and urban legends also memorably haunted generations of youngsters with its surreal and nightmarish illustrations by award-winning artist Stephen Gammell. Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of Sean Daniel Company and Elizabeth Grave of 1212 Entertainment are producing, while Roberto Grande and Joshua Long will executive produce. Mark Ross and Alex Ginno are overseeing for CBS Films. An earlier iteration of the feature project had Saw’s Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton scripting before producers shifted gears. August is going back to the source material for his take and a director will be the next piece to fall into place. The frequent Tim Burton scribe most recently wrote 2012′s Frankenweenie, which earned an Oscar nom for Best Animated Feature; he’s repped by UTA and attorney Ken Richman.

deadline.com/2016/01/guillermo-del-toro-scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark-alvin-schwartz-cbs-films-1201682700/Guillermo Del Toro Warms To ‘Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark’ Guillermo del Toro will develop to potentially direct Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark for CBS Films. The film is based on the wildly successful trilogy of books by Alvin Schwartz, which included iconic illustrations by Stephen Gammell. John August wrote the script. I have been dancing with del Toro on this for two months, but now his deal is making and he’s coming attached. He is such a big fan of the books that he owns ten of the original illustrations by Gammell. When this will all happen is unclear; del Toro is juggling a few projects that include a remake of Fantastic Voyage at Fox, a Pacific Rim sequel and a personal project he’s kept close to the vest. In addition to potentially directing, del Toro will also produce the film alongside Sean Daniel, Jason Brown and Elizabeth Grave. Alvin Schwartz’s trilogy of short story collections have sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. Even though, from the moment it was published in 1984, the Scary Stories series was one of the most banned from placement by the American Library Association, as the collections were considered to be too scary for children. The ensuing controversy only helped to fuel sales, and the trilogy has remained a cultural phenomenon ever since. Plot specifics are being kept under wraps, but those who’ve read the books recall how much stories like The Red Spot, Harold and The Wendigo haunted their dreams. This could be a good one. WME and Exile Entertainment rep del Toro.
