Matthew Kreger decided to open a comic shop after retiring from a 25-year career as an opera singer, so he joined forces with a local gaming store to launch Boom Comics in Topeka, Kansas. He’s doing it partly to sell off his massive collection of back issues, but he also offers weekly Magic games and has one of the few Walking Dead pinball machines in Kansas. “We really want to make it like your basement. So come in, we have snacks, we have sodas, we have everything here to make you feel at home,” he said.

After retiring from a 25-year professional opera singing career, Matthew Kreger decided to open a store reflecting his lifelong love of comics called Boom Comics at 2025 S.W. Gage Blvd.
“My favorite thing is comics, period,” Kreger said. “I really enjoy going through peoples personal collections, finding hidden gems, and telling them about what they actually have in their collections, what’s worth the most and what’s worst the least. I have been collecting my whole life. I have about 100,000 comics in my personal collection, and the store is kind of a way for me to get rid of some of the back issues that are taking up space in the garage.”
Kreger was born and raised in Topeka and graduated from Shawnee Heights in 1986. He moved back to Topeka last year, and after meeting the guys from Table Talk Games — a game retailer in the capital city — they decided to combine forces.
“I really wanted to open a new comic store, and when I found out about Table Talk Games and their board gaming experience, I thought it was a unique combination that would bring them both together and offer them both under the same umbrella,” Kreger said. “We decided that Topeka needed a new comic book store and a new place for the community to come and play games and have fun.”
On Mondays and Fridays, the store offers Magic the Gathering events, and Kreger hired local Magic player Jordan Cook to manage the games. The event starts at 6 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m.
“I really like that we have a nice place to play. It’s very wide open places to walk around after you finish your match, and it’s just a good environment,” Cook said.
The shop also shows “The Walking Dead” AMC television show on Sundays and features one of the only “The Walking Dead” pinball machines in Kansas. Along with the entertainment, Kreger has a few rare comics on display for kids to come and check out.
They are: X-Men No. 1, signed by Stan Lee, Spiderman No. 1, signed by Stan Lee, and Kreger’s personal favorite, the Amazing Fantasy 15.
“The coolest thing about this is it is in Topeka and you can actually come and see it,” Kreger said. “When I was a kid, and there was a really valuable comic, you never would have thought it would be in Topeka. It would be somewhere else, but it’s actually here so you can come and have a look.”
