Cinedigm Inks Vimeo Internet VOD Film Pact, Focused on Fantasy and Sci-Fi Titles
Studio’s first title under digital distribution deal is ‘My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks’
Cinedigm and IAC’s Vimeo have signed a deal under which the studio will release films via the Internet video-on-demand platform — geared around fantasy and sci-fi titles — kicking off with the release Tuesday of animated feature “My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks.”
Under the deal, Cinedigm will release films both exclusively and non-exclusively on Vimeo On Demand over the next year and will participate in jointly marketing the titles. The companies did not disclose a set number of films covered under the pact.
“Both Cinedigm and Vimeo have recently placed significant focus on the ‘fan boy’ digital consumer segment,” said Sam Toles, Vimeo’s VP of content acquisitions and business development. “We’ll be exploring unique strategies surrounding their recently announced partnership with Wizard World’s Comic Con and projects that align with Vimeo’s curation focus in the sci-fi and fantasy genre.”
The pact expands Cinedigm’s retail and digital distribution reach, with current partners that include Walmart, Target, iTunes, Netflix and Amazon.com, as well as cable VOD services. In addition, Cinedigm has kicked off an over-the-top Internet video strategy; its first OTT channel, Docurama, launched in May 2014, with additional channels to include a Comic Con-branded channel in partnership with Wizard World slated to launch in Q4 2014.
“We are excited to expand our content availability by offering the millions of Vimeo viewers high-quality programming including ‘My Little Pony Equestria Girls’ and other branded content,” said Yolanda Macias, Cinedigm’s EVP of acquisitions, forecast, planning and digital sales.
Starting Tuesday, users can purchase or rent “My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks” from Vimeo, and receive bonus material that includes eight prequels and three sing-alongs. Vimeo also offers the prequel “My Little Pony: Equestria Girls” on the VOD service.
