Main St. in Princeton, sells comic books, collectibles, action figures, toys, graphic novels, T-shirts, gaming items (Magic, Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh), board games, limited edition merchandise from Marvel and DC Comics, and artisan crafts from local artists. It also has a gaming mezzanine upstairs where people can play games plus a place to hold tournaments. Cinq-Mars, who lives in Lake Thunderbird, opened Dark Star Comics in September. He had a store in Lacon for a few months but moved it to Princeton. “We needed the extra space for games and merchandise. I like the Main Street atmosphere,” he said. “I wanted to open in Princeton, but started in Lacon.” Cinq-Mars will sell gift certificates and people can hold parties there. He also has a bargain bin of comics with items for $1. Another service is costuming where people can play different roles in games by dressing up as those characters. The store was named after Grateful Dead song “Dark Star,” which appealed to Cinq-Mars. The store is open later than other businesses, which gives people an opportunity to have time to relax by playing games after school or after work. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays. The phone number is 815-303-7067.

Dark Star Comics is a comic book store in Princeton, IL. "My family, friends, and I have supported this shop for awhile now. We have promoted, spent our fair share of time, and spent plenty of our money here. I just hope the shop adapts a better business etiquette. In the past few months we have shown up to the store during "business hours" just to find out that Dark Star Comics wasn't even open. We then watched their Facebook page to see when and if they would open. Most of the time we would still drive 20 miles, even after confirming that their shop was open via their Facebook page, and find the shop closed. Then Dark Star Comics hired a new employee so that they could be open consistently. For about two weeks everything had calmed, until they got rid of the employee due to lack of funds. Sadly did the owners not know that their employee had increased their profit margins quite a bit since being employed just for two weeks. Approximately within a week of his termination, they rehired him only an hour before opening with the same amount of time of notice. My friend and I arrived that day to pick up several comics that were pre-ordered two weeks in advance, we had spent about $70 or more apiece. When we inquired about our already bought items the employee, that was just rehired that day, had a hard time sorting through the mess of paperwork and products that were unorganized. The documents that contained pre-orders and such, a standard notebook, had been misplaced by the owners. We presented our receipts to confirm purchases and watched as the uneasy employee scuttled to find where our books were placed. After looking for a good ten minutes he had finally found them. Our pre-orders we already paid for had been put up on the shelves for sale. The employee apologized profusely, we then left feeling disgusted...Take this as badly needed criticism. We wish the best of luck with your business. In the past two months, friends and I have witnessed several people waiting at the shop for it to be open, within the proper store hours, and leave angry. Please keep consistent business hours, invest in a properly set up ledger, and remember your customers are #1. Whether your shop is open and in the middle of your meal or have a group of people conversing within the shop, the customer is always #1." My entire family was banned after giving the store owners constructive criticism and advice in a polite and professional manner. I will not be returning to this store.
