Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Smart Girls joins Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Industries and Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry, already in Legendary’s portfolio of digital assets. Smart Girls, run by Meredith Walker, was launched with Amy Miles in 2008, and has generated more than 5 million views on its YouTube channel. The network has more than 550,000 fans on Facebook. Legendary sees the acquisition as a way to create an online destination for geek and fanboy content through which it can develop multi-platform content, and generate revenue from advertising and other marketing opportunities — especially as a growing number of consumers are turning to their mobile devices for entertainment programming. Legendary’s digital networks are overseen by Legendary’s president of Television and Digital Media, Bruce Rosenblum. The division is currently turning Capcom’s horror videogame “Dead Rising” into a feature for Sony’s Crackle, and producing the series “Love,” from Judd Apatow, Paul Rust and Lesley Arfin as an original series for Netflix. “We at Smart Girls are excited to be working with Legendary and look forward to providing funny and inspirational content for all of the goofballs out there,” Poehler said.
