variety.com/2014/film/news/william-hurt-jesse-owens-biopic-race-1201318601/William Hurt has joined Jesse Owens biopic “Race” opposite Jeremy Irons, Jason Sudeikis, Carice van Houten and Stephan James. Focus Features also has set the release for April 8, 2016. “Race,” directed by Stephen Hopkins from a script by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, is currently being filmed in Montreal and at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. The stadium is where Owens won four Olympic gold medals in 1936 in a repudiation of Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. Hurt will portray Jeremiah Mahoney, president of the Amateur Athletic Union, who led efforts to boycott the 1936 Olympics. Producers are Jean Charles Lévy for Forecast Pictures, Luc Dayan for ID+, Kate Garwood and Hopkins for Totally Commercial Films, Louis-Philippe Rochon and Dominique Seguin for Canada’s Solofilms and Karsten Brunig and Thierry Potok for Germany’s Trinity Race GmbH. Hurt will next be seen in “The Moon and the Sun.” He is represented by ICM Partners. Mister Smith Entertainment is handling international distribution.
