Netflix has set a 2016 debut for “Kong – King of the Apes,” an original animated TV series and feature-length film for kids from executive producer Avi Arad.
The SVOD leader has ordered a movie and 12 half-hour episodes from animation studio 41 Entertainment and Arad Prods. Slated to premiere worldwide sometime in 2016, the CGI-animated movie and series will be “a fresh and modern take on the classic King Kong story,” according to the companies.
Arad has produced superhero stories including movies in the “Spider-Man,” “X-Men” and “Iron Man” franchises. The former CEO of Marvel Studios, who left in 2006, has also exec produced children’s television shows including “Pac-Man” and the “Ghostly Adventures” series which began in 2013.
“I always loved King Kong. This is a unique opportunity to introduce him in brilliant CGI animation to kids worldwide with the power of Netflix,” Arad said in a statement.
Added Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos, “We’re thrilled to be working with Avi who has made some of the most successful action and adventure franchises today… With 41 Entertainment as our partner on this, we continue to work with some of the finest animation studios around the world to create shows that will appeal to kids of all ages globally.”
In “Kong – King of the Apes,” set in 2050, the humanistic giant ape is housed on San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island, which has since been transformed into a natural history and marine preserve. But when the star attraction suddenly goes ape — and Kong becomes public enemy No. 1 — the villain that framed him is free to unleash an army of gigantic robotic dinosaurs on the unsuspecting world.
