The Comic Book and Record Shop in Elkin, North Carolina, seems to have a nostalgia focus, offering Golden and Silver Age comics and vinyl records.

Elkin is home to a the new Comic Book and Record Shop at 137A South Bridge Street. The shop, which opened in July, has more than 20,000 comic books and approximately 2,000 albums, as well as a number of comic book accessories and vintage items.
“It is the only store of its kind in all of Western North Carolina,” said Doug Berry, spokesman. “We sell Golden Age Comics, Silver Age Comics, Disney comics, Marvel, Archie and Friends, Jughead, Action Comics (Superman), Detective Comics (DC), Harvey Comics, Gold Key, Whitman and more. We offer a number of action figures and try to get rare figures. Right now we have a stuffed Quick Draw McGraw. We have people from high school to college age to adults who are interested in the books.”
Ricky Roberts, fiance of owner Teresa Houston, custom built the cabinets for the store, and, as a result, they are easily accessible and attractively displayed. The shop is also pet-friendly.
Houston said the number one reason people flock to the shop is a nostalgia for the good old days.
“Most people tie collecting items to some memory they had that is important to them,” she said. “It may be that they read that comic book with their grandfather or want an album of the first concert they attended.”
The store is divided into two sections. One section contains the comic books and the other section is filled with vintage records. A classic record player turntable is available in order to give the records a test run.
“We even have a few old Thomas Edison records,” Berry said. “In the old days, when people bought a gramophone they often received a record with it.”
Berry said the store has a large variety of genres, from comedy to blue grass, classic rock, garage music as well as original albums recorded by local high schools and churches. They also carry speakers and old record players for sale.
“We are glad to do a wish list for people,” Roberts said.
“We have about an 80 percent success rate of finding what people are looking for,” Berry added. “We try to be very fair when we buy things as well.”
“We now have seven antique stores in town now,” Houston said. “It’s a nice blend to also have the comic shop with vintage records. We feel it is unusual enough that people are coming out of the woodwork to see what we have.”
Because of the numerous shops, Elkin antique dealers plan to promote the town as an antique destination.
“We have a number of people who are tourists ask us for information about where to eat or visit in the area,” Berry said. “We generously give them information about other local businesses to promote our area.”
