BIARRITZ– Netflix has acquired hit franchise-based toon series “Wakfu” from Ankama, a leading French vidgame and animation company.
Created at Ankama’s animation studio located in Northern France, “Wakfu” is an epic fantasy-adventure series adapted from the hit video game.
“This partnership represents very high visibility and a strong growth opportunity for Ankama,” said Olivier Comte, Ankama’s managing director and COO. “We are very excited to be working with Netflix. We can now take a great French series across the globe, with just one agreement. It is incredibly motivating for our young and growing team of about 500 employees.”
Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s CCO, said “Animation has a very strong history in France and French animators are among the best and most innovative in the world.” Sarandos added that Netflix expected “to further strengthen our relationship with Ankama and other French animation studios.”
The first two seasons of “Wakfu,” which comprise 52 half-hour episodes, have been pulling hit ratings on pubcaster France Televisions.
The fantasy series follow the adventures of an orphan with extraordinary powers who embarks on an epic journey to find his family.
“Wakfu” will bow on Netflix in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Netherlands and Nordics on Sept. 14. “Wakfu” will also be available on Netflix in France, Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg when the service starts in those countries and across Latin America this fall.
In the run-up to its launch in the Fall, Netflix has also commissioned “Marseille,” a sprawling crime skein created and penned by “Carlos” co-scribe Dan Franck. “Marseilles” is being produced by Pascal Breton’s Federation Entertainment and will premiere exclusively in every Netflix territory in late 2015.
