Filmmaking brothers Michael and Peter Spierig have come on board to direct Hammer Films’ “Winchester,” a supernatural thriller based on the Winchester Mystery House.
The brothers are rewriting a script by Tom Vaughan that tells the story of Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester firearms fortune.
Hammer, which acquired the rights to the story in 2012, is planning an early 2015 start date.
Producers are Brett Matthew Tomberlin and Antonia Lianos of Imagination Design Works, Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert of Nine/8 Entertainment and Tobin Armbrust and Simon Oakes for Hammer.
The house, marketed as the “world’s most haunted house,” was built by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester rifle fortune. The Victorian mansion in San Jose, Calif., was under construction around the clock from 1884 until her death in 1922.
It’s believed that Winchester was convinced she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by “the gun that won the west” and believed that if she continued building the house, she would live forever.
“We can’t wait to see what the Spierig brothers unearth as they delve in to the mysteries of Sarah Winchester and her infamous haunted house,” said Tobin Armbrust of Hammer Films. “As the first feature film ever shot inside the Winchester Mystery House, we are excited to have these fantastic filmmakers bring their unique vision to the table.”
The Spierig brothers credits include “Daybreakers” and the recently wrapped Ethan Hawke starrer “Predestination.” They are repped by WME and the Pitt Group.
