www.fangoria.com/new/long-delayed-the-poughkeepsie-tapes-finally-hits-vod/Thanks to the growing reach of digital distribution and instant streaming, many of contemporary horror’s famously shelved films have finally found release, such as Jonathan Levine’s ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE and Stephen Sommers’ ODD THOMAS. While the fates of studio titles like 7500 and AREA 51 remain unsure, one long-languishing film has finally and quietly found itself readily available: The Dowdle Brothers’ found-footage shocker THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES. Following a big marketing push for the film in 2007, MGM suddenly and inexplicably pulled THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES from it’s spring release date. Afterwards, the film stayed on the shelf with no alternative method of release while bootlegged copies of its festival run workprint made the rounds on the internet and convention circles. And while other studios made offers towards MGM to pick up the film, with John Dowdle himself hoping to buy back the film at one point, a concrete deal was never made. Now, seven years later, THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES is available via DirecTV Video On-Demand by MGM, according to DirecTV’s website. The film is not available on other VOD platforms just yet, at which time we’ll likely learn more about whether the film will see a home media release and possibly why it was released without fanfare. But nevertheless, U.S. audiences can watch THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES officially and legally for the first time today. For those interested, you can catch the film before the release of John Dowdle’s next horror film, AS ABOVE, SO BELOW, which hits theaters August 29th from Universal Pictures.
