Comic book store opens in Bradford
SPIDERMAN, Batman and co have made a new home at a comic book shop in Bradford thanks to a 21-year-old woman taking on her first business venture.
Beth Whitaker, of Holme Wood, opened up It’s A Trap! comic book shop in Market Street, Bradford on July 5.
She was able to start up the business after securing a £6,000 cash boost from the Business Enterprise Fund, which is run through the Bradford Chamber of Commerce.
Through their advice, Beth was handed the funds via a Government start-up loan scheme within two weeks.
The shop will be open every Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and every Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
It will stock hundreds of comic books, merchandise including bags and board games and also cover cult interest film and television programmes such as Game of Thrones, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The Walking Dead.
The former Dixons Academy student says she is confident the shop will be a success as she says there is an untapped market of comic book fans already in Bradford.
A Facebook page is proving popular, having already secured more than 200 likes in its opening few days.
Initially, Beth will be the only staff member at the shop but has a team of volunteers helping out during the summer holiday.
Beth, a former Bradford College student, said: “This is the best thing I have ever done.
“I’ve wanted to do this for quite a few years. I talked about opening up a shop a long time ago. I always said I would love to do it.
“I’m very confident in the business as the market is already there in Bradford. Before people would have to go to a shop in Leeds.
“The buzz around the shop has been brilliant, everyone has been so supportive.
“There hasn’t been anything like this in Bradford for quite some time.
“People really like to get comic books online, but they also prefer to have them in hand, as it’s nice to keep them properly.
“The market is mostly male but there are quite a lot of females interested in it. Things are growing, there’s a good market out there for it.
“Mostly, my skills and confidence come through volunteering for Oxfam and then learned from their in terms of business management.”
The Business Enterprise Fund lends money to businesses who are unable to get lending from the banks. As a social enterprise there are no shareholders, with any profits generated reinvested into the business.
They have helped out almost 200 start-up loans for businesses across West and North Yorkshire.
