variety.com/2014/tv/news/colin-farrell-in-talks-for-true-detective-season-two-1201261235/Colin Farrell is in talks to star in the second season of HBO’s “True Detective,” sources confirm. He’s the first actor to board season 2 of the highly acclaimed drama after months of rumors and Internet speculation. ““I think the people we will cast will be well-known names,” HBO president Michael Lombardo hinted at Thursday’s TCA presentation. “But that wasn’t our ambition (in season 1).” It’s unknown whether Farrell will be joined by a female co-star, as rumored, but creator Nic Pizzolatto has confirmed that the new season will be set in California and feature at least three lead roles. “It takes place in California — not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California — and we’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season 1.” “True Detective” earned multiple Emmy nominations on Thursday, including lead actor nods for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and a best drama nomination. With an average gross audience of 11 million viewers, the show’s ratings were the most for an HBO rookie series since “Six Feet Under” in 2001. HBO declined to comment on this report, which was first reported by Deadline, but did say at Thursday’s TCA session that the second season would be “more exciting” than the first. “Nic (Pizzolatto) is an incredibly talented writer, and he’s blown us away with the first two episodes,” Lombardo said. Farrell, who recently starred in “Saving Mr. Banks,” recently wrapped production on “Miss Julie” opposite Jessica Chastain. He is represented by CAA and LBI Entertainment.

variety.com/2014/news/vince-vaughn-true-detective-1201275539/Vince Vaughn is in early talks to join the cast of the second season of HBO’s “True Detective,” sources tell Variety. Though talks are just getting off the ground, casting is expected to come together fast as shooting is set to begin next month. Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch are also in talks. The role is unknown but sources say it is unlikely that Vaughn would play one of the lead detectives in the show as the third lead is expected to be played by a woman. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto is still working on the scripts while HBO moves quickly to assemble the cast. Sources say Vaughn has been interested in joining for sometime and has been campaigning with HBO for a part in the show. HBO is also looking for a director and sources say it is likely that there will be multiple directors this season, unlike the last, when Cary Fukunaga helmed every episode. The network is also working hard to find the female lead and while no decision has been made, several insiders say HBO may be eyeing “Mad Men” actress Elisabeth Moss. Sources add that no decision has been made and meetings are still taking place. Vaughn is repped by CAA and was last seen in DreamWorks’ “Delivery Man.” The Vaughn news was first reported by TVLine.

variety.com/2014/news/justin-lin-in-talks-to-direct-true-detective-1201298766/Pieces look to be coming together on season 2 of HBO’s “True Detective,” as sources have confirmed Justin Lin is in talks to direct a handful of episodes for the drama series. It’s unknown how many he would direct, but insiders add that he will not direct every episode as Cary Fukunaga did for season one. No cast has been confirmed by the network but Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn are in final negotiations to join the show. The fourth lead, which has always been intended to be a female character, is still being figured out but sources say “Mad Men” actress Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams are in the running . Nic Pizzolatto is writing the second season, which is set in California and is said to revolve around the investigation of a corrupt city manager who gets murdered amidst a potential groundbreaking transportation deal. Lin is currently attached to direct the next installment in the “Bourne” franchise but will be able to squeeze this in before production begins next year. He recently directed the pilot to CBS’ “Scorpion” which was picked up and will premiere Sept. 22. Lin is repped by CAA and Cinetic Media.

variety.com/2014/tv/news/taylor-kitsch-true-detective-season-2-1201340500/Taylor Kitsch Says He’s in ‘True Detective’ Season 2 Taylor Kitsch wants his next role to be a “True” one. Kitch said in an interview with AdWeek that he’s on board for HBO’s “True Detective” after months of speculation, saying that he “can’t f–king wait to hit the camera” on the drama. “Yeah, I’m really excited,” the “Normal Heart” actor told AdWeek. “I’ve just been prepping. It’s been almost a full year since I’ve been on camera, so I’m itching, man. I’m overdue.” “You want to work, but you also don’t want to just water it down and work for the sake of working,” he said. “So, it was tough to sit a year out, keeping a finger crossed that I was going to get True.” The actor received widespread attention for his role in NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” and most recently was seen in HBO film “The Normal Heart,” last year’s “Lone Survivor” and a “Call of Duty” commercial. Kitsch said he would be shooting on location in L.A. with a contemporary setting. HBO has yet to confirm the casting. Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughan are already on board for the show’s second season, and Rachel McAdams is said to be locking down the female lead.

variety.com/2014/tv/news/true-detective-kelly-reilly-hbo-1201363772/True Detective’: Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly Confirmed for Season 2 HBO has rounded out the cast of “True Detective,” tapping Kelly Reilly for a key role as wife of the crime boss played by Vince Vaughn. Reilly will play Jordan, described as a former D-list actress who is an active partner in the criminal enterprises run by her husband, Frank Semyon. HBO has also confirmed at long last that Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams are co-starring the sophomore season of “True Detective” opposite Vaughn and Colin Farrell. Production on the eight-episode season has begun in California, HBO said Monday. Variety first reported that McAdams was in talks for the role in September. Taylor Kitsch also said himself last month that he was joining the cast. Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol on the run from a difficult past. McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves. Presumably, she goes up against Farrell’s Ray Velcoro, who is described as a corrupt detective ruled by Semyon. The casting on “True Detective’s” second installment have dribbled out over the summer and early fall amid feverish speculation about the show’s next incarnation. There’s no word yet on a premiere date. Correction: A previous version of this post said the show had been set for January premiere. HBO has yet to formally announce a premiere date.

variety.com/2015/tv/news/true-detective-season-2-details-vince-vaughn-1201432314/Vince Vaughn Says ‘True Detective’ Season 2 is ‘Very Different’ Now that “True Detective” has set its cast for season two (Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly), the stars are finally starting to open up about the show’s hotly-anticipated return. In an interview with Playboy, Vaughn admits that he’s not feeling particularly pressured by the prospect of following Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey’s acclaimed performances. “[Creator] Nic Pizzolatto is such a great writer, and so much of this is driven by his stories,” Vaughn says. “I thought Woody and Matthew did an exceptional job with the first season. This one’s very different, though. It’s a totally different story, with its own characters. The thing that’s consistent is the richness of the characters and the quality of the material.” The season’s new setting has a lot to do with the difference in tone, according to Vaughn. “That was Louisiana. This is a California-based story, and it was kind of birthed from here. A lot of it is set in Los Angeles.” Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a man in danger of losing his criminal empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. “I really like my character. Nic is so great about investigating characters and their complexities in an authentic and engaging way,” he tells Playboy. “I want to watch this show not because I’m in it but as a fan of the material.” The “Wedding Crashers” star originally met Pizzolatto because of a completely different project, but the pair apparently hit it off: “I was developing a movie version of ‘The Rockford Files’ and met with Nic about writing it. He was really enthusiastic but was already working on a crime drama set in Los Angeles, and he gracefully said it was best for him to focus on ‘True Detective,'” Vaughn recalls. “Then he reached out to me about doing that series, and I was beyond flattered and thrilled to collaborate with him. I was happy to work with Colin Farrell too, whom I’d never worked with before.” Vaughn is best known for his studio comedies, and admits “it’s nice now to be mixing it up and doing something different with ‘True Detective,'” but he isn’t ready to write off the movie industry just yet. “I wouldn’t say [TV is] more interesting; it’s just different. A film like ‘The Way Way Back’ with Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell was as smart as anything you’d see in any format,” he says, while conceding, “TV is definitely having its moment. It’s almost as if we’ve discovered how exciting it can be to tell a story over a longer time frame. In the 1990s we went through a run of independent films that captured the attention of critics and a certain type of audience member. Those movies were edgy, offbeat and risky and had fully drawn adult characters. You can’t do that as easily anymore on a big studio movie. If you can’t turn something into a franchise that gets people into seats that first weekend, you’re probably not going to get your movie made… You also have all these new avenues of financing and distribution, which have the studios running a little scared. Netflix, Amazon, other streaming outlets — they appear to have more patience to finance character-based stories. And not just dramas. I think Netflix in particular has been a fantastic place for documentaries to land and be seen. But the basics are still the same: You want a great story; you need good characters, good actors and someone in charge who’s running it well. I think it’s the most exciting time since probably the early 1970s for actors, writers and directors in terms of doing meaningful, intelligent, grown-up work, and that has a lot to do with these episodic shows.” A premiere date for “True Detective” season two has yet to be announced.
