www.bleedingcool.com/2014/07/10/archie-announces-dark-circle-comics/According to USAToday.com, Archie Comics is taking their Red Circle comic characters and making them a little darker. Characters like The Shield, The Fox, Firefly and The Web will be relaunched next year under the banner of Dark Circle Comics. We got a rumbling of that back in May from the retailer summit and Rich wrote it up with a nice brief history of the Red Circle Comics. The new line will be edited by Alex Segura who also doubles as the company’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Publicity. He talked about the change from red to dark. “Most comic fans know its history of being rebooted a handful of times in various places, most recently as an all-digital line in 2012. With Dark Circle, we want to not only break away from that, but also show fans, retailers and newcomers that this is a fresh start featuring recognizable names and icons with zero baggage. It starts here. You don’t need to read anything else.” The new books will be done in 5-issue story arcs with breaks for trades. This announcement fits in with the company’s move to produce more adult themed stories in line with the recent Life with Archie and Afterlife with Archie. “These are not superhero comics for kids, nor are we trying to make everything-for-everyone comics. These books are on par, content-wise, with anything Image, DC or Marvel are putting out — hopefully better. We’re not looking to be the 53rd book in (DC’s) ‘The New 52′ or the 12th X-Menbook. Those guys do those books well. We’re taking our inspiration from cable networks like HBO, AMC and FX — great, diverse programming featuring some iconic characters that have yet to see their most definitive stories told. That’s what we want to do now.” Segura says he has a “dream team” of creators for the new series, but did not mention any specific names or titles. We will hear more about that during San Diego Comic Con and from the previous word we had, expect the new books to debut in November.

www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=53976USA Today reports that Archie Comics' Red Circle Comics superhero line will be relaunched in 2015 as Dark Circle Comic under the watch of editor and Archie senior vice president of marketing Alex Segura. "Dark Circle has an entire library of heroes, villains, worlds and teams that has been basically untapped," Segura told USA Today. "We're bringing together a group of great writers, artists and more to jump in without many rules. We're handing them the keys and telling them to go crazy." Segura further noted the success of Mark Waid and Dean Haspiel's "The Fox" miniseries as an indication that audiences desire new takes on characters that require little knowledge of them before jumping in. "There's an audience for creator-driven superhero stories that don't require you to read 10 other titles or a decade's worth of continuity just to get a sense of what's going on," he said. "We're not looking to be the 53rd book in (DC's) 'The New 52' or the 12th X-Men book. Those guys do those books well. We're taking our inspiration from cable networks like HBO, AMC and FX -- great, diverse programming featuring some iconic characters that have yet to see their most definitive stories told. That's what we want to do now." Archie relaunched the Red Circle Comics characters in 2011 with the "New Crusaders" digital series by Ian Flynn and Ben Bates as a part of Archie and iVerse Media's partnership. Waid and Haspiel's "The Fox" launched in 2013 with backup stories featuring The Shield by J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Cavallaro. While the USA Today piece gave no indication of any creative teams or characters for the Dark Circle Comics launch in 2015, it's likely more information will come to light in the coming months. The Dark Circle Comics rebranding comes amidst a time of unique projects for Archie Comics, including the continuation of "Afterlife with Archie" and a new, darker "Sabrina: The Teenage Witch" series set to launch in October.

comicsbeat.com/archie-rebrands-superhero-line-as-dark-circle/Archie rebrands Superhero line as Dark Circle Oh man, it’s getting dark and edgy at Archie Comics! They’ve been planning a reboot of their superhero line for a while, with SVP and respected mystery novelist Alex Segura helping out with the editorial side, and now it’s getting a new name: Formerly known as Red Circle, the reboot will now be known as Dark Circle — maybe giving it a bit of a horror edge and playing off the massive success of Afterlife with Archie, the zombies in Riverdale epic. More details will be announced at BEFORE San Diego. Today, Archie Comics announced plans to relaunch its superhero imprint with a new name: Dark Circle Comics. The name change signals a new direction for the superhero titles, which will feature a more cinematic, literary and mature approach to the characters told in accessible stories that will appeal to new and longtime fans. Previously known as Red Circle Comics, the new imprint will announce a slate of titles in advance of Comic Con International: San Diego later this month. The imprint news broke in USA TODAY via an interview with Dark Circle Comics Editor Alex Segura. The story also debuted the imprint’s new logo. “When we brought Alex onboard to oversee our superhero imprint, we knew we needed to be bold and decisive with how these books were presented, in every way. They couldn’t just be more of the same,” said Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “This is a fresh start and a new direction for these iconic characters. It all boils down to story – tales that feature compelling characters by some of the best talent in comics. Alex – with the help of myself, our President Mike Pellerito, CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Editor Paul Kaminski – has carefully curated a line of comics that will hopefully be seen as the definitive interpretations of these characters for a long time. We couldn’t be more excited.” “These will be creator-driven books telling new, genre bending stories with some of the best characters in comics,” said Segura. “They’ll be more akin to cable television shows like Boardwalk Empire, True Detective and Orange is the New Black. Unique voices telling stories about flawed characters from a range of genres, including crime, superhero adventure and off-the-wall action. These are definitely not all-ages comics – they’ll compete with the best Image, DC and Marvel have to offer. They won’t be bogged down by continuity while still carrying on the legacy of these heroes. Fans are in for a treat.”
