Rick Santorum's EchoLight Studios plans to release a movie exploring the Supreme Court decision that was announced Monday.
EchoLight Studios, run by former presidential candidate Rick Santorum, said Monday it will release a movie Sep. 1 that explores the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court decision that was handed down Monday.
The film, a documentary called One Generation Away: The Erosion of Religious Liberty, has been in the works for several months. The movie makes the case that the free expression of Christianity has lately been taking a backseat to free speech, government expansion and political correctness, and the Hobby Lobby case is one example from the film.
The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Monday that President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act violates federal laws protecting religious freedom by forcing privately held companies to pay for insurance that covers certain kinds of contraception. Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties, each of which are owned by Christian families, sued U.S. Secretary of Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius over the matter and the case was renamed Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores when Sylvia Burwell replaced Sebelius in April.
EchoLight describes One Generation Away as a "docudrama that explores several current state and federal court cases." The movie, directed and produced by Ken Carpenter, features remarks by President Ronald Reagan and interviews with several experts on the topic of religious freedom, including former GOP presidential candidate and Fox News Channel host Mike Huckabee.
The studio will release the movie through its EchoLight Cinemas, which will show it first in churches before opening it in theaters. It will be the company's debut release. A trailer is below.
Besides Hobby Lobby, the movie will explore legal cases involving the U.S. military, high school cheerleaders, a few involving college campuses and a provider of wedding services.
EchoLight Studios produces and distributes "movies for families of faith" and Santorum, the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania who unsuccessfully ran against Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination for president, joined as chairman and CEO a year ago. The company recently released a western, The Redemption of Henry Myers, on DVD and is rereleasing to theaters later this year The Christmas Candle, which earned more than $2 million last Christmas during a limited release.
EchoLight Studios is co-producing One Generation Away with Abington Ridge Films, American Family Studios and Triple Horse Studios.
The film, said EchoLight Studios president Jeff Sheets, "clearly presents the complex perspective on important issues, like the recent Hobby Lobby case, that your average Christian American doesn't think about every day."
