Myx TV will premiere its latest original reality series, “Call to Cosplay,” at 8 p.m. June 30 and Variety has an exclusive first look at the creative competition show.
The series, hosted by anime expert Keith Kawamura, consists of six episodes with two cosplayers competing against each other each week for a cash prize and bragging rights among their peers. Contestants are given a theme, budget, mystery element and less than eight hours to create a character and costume from scratch before their creations and performances are judged by a panel of experts and scored on four main criteria: authenticity, creativity, “wow” factor and craftsmanship. Weekly contest themes will include sports anime, magical girls, American/non-Japanese characters, throwback anime (pre-1990) and heavy metal armor throw-down.
“ ‘Call to Cosplay’ is our way of showing genuine respect and affection for the passionate group of fans and artists who represent this thriving sub-culture and we’re happy to give them a place to demonstrate their skills on Myx TV,” said Miguel Santos, general manager of Myx TV.
Each episode of “Call to Cosplay” will be exclusively available to premium members on anime website Crunchyroll for one week after its initial airing on Myx TV.
Executive producer of “Call to Cosplay” is George Chung, whose credits include the two-time Emmy-winning series, “Kanga Roddy,” “49ers Total Access,” “Fight Night at the Playboy Mansion” and “Super Fight League.” Executive producer and executive in charge of production for Myx TV is Miguel Santos. Myx TV is the only English-language multicultural Asian-American entertainment network in the United States and is distributed by Intl. Media Distribution, which is owned by NBCUniversal.
Cosplay — a term meaning ‘costume play’ — is a popular subculture where participants dress-up and role play various characters from anime, manga, comic books and more. The activity has garnered more on-screen recognition of late thanks to Syfy’s reality docuseries “Heroes of Cosplay,” and cosplayers’ inclusion in competition series such as TBS’ “King of the Nerds” and Syfy’s “Fangasm.” “Call to Cosplay” is the first wholly cosplay-based competition show to hit U.S. screens.
