Is That Even The Question We Should Be Asking? According to a rumor published by Latino Review, Warner Bros. are loosely planning a solo Batman movie for 2019 and they’re thinking about calling it The Batman. If this is true, then this marks the most organised moment in the history of the studio. Remember how they scheduled a Man of Steel sequel that was going to feature Batman for 2015? Then they pushed it back to 2016 and made it a Justice League prequel? Why would they be behaving any differently now? What I want to know, rather than any pencil-plots that WB may or may not be making on the back of envelopes right now, is how they’re treating Batman right now, as part of the whole crossover, bigger picture deal. The character has been phenomenally successful for them, both as the star of feature films and with his own TV series, albeit animated ones. Now Gotham looks like one of the hot appointments in the fall TV season. I think the character is a whole lot more important to the success of their superhero ‘universe’ than even they do. More importantly, I don’t think he’s so likely to work as a team-player. But we’ll see. And we’ll only see by finding out just who this new Batman is. Maybe they’ve reinvented him in a way that makes “team up” sense. Maybe. I certainly hope so.
