From: variety.com/2014/film/news/jon-chu-to-direct-hasbros-live-action-jem-and-the-holograms-movie-1201140547/Jon M. Chu will direct Hasbro’s live action “Jem and the Holograms” movie, based on cult 1980s animated series. Blumhouse Prods’ Jason Blum will produce the film with Hasbro, Chu and Scooter Braun, the music talent manager who reps Justin Bieber and runs Raymond-Braun Media Group with Usher. The trio announced their involvement in the project on Thursday via an online video on Tumblr. In the video and site, the producers ask fans for help in the creative process Chu most recently directed “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” but has created a nice niche for himself for directing dance pics like the “Step Up” series and Bieber’s “Never Say Never.” Ryan Landels penned the script for the “Jem and the Holograms” film, which will begin production this spring. Project will reimagine Jem for a hyperlinked social media age, the producers say, and revolve around an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation, she and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt –- one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jem-holograms-finds-stars-698570Jem is her name, no one else is the same. In her first major film role, Nashville actress Aubrey Peeples has been cast as the lead, Jem, in the live-action Jem and the Holograms film, which is being directed by Jon M. Chu. The Holograms have also been cast: Stefanie Scott, who starred on Disney's A.N.T. Farm, will play Jem's sister, Kimber; Pretty Little Liars actress Aurora Perrineau will play Shana; and The Fosters' Hayley Kiyoko has been cast as Aja. Based on the 1980s Hasbro toy line that was also a beloved cartoon, the film will be produced by Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun Productions and Chu. The film has been moving along quite quickly, and is already shooting. The cartoon ran from 1985 to 1988 and chronicled the adventures of Jerrica Benton and her alter ego, Jem, a singer who fronted a band called The Holograms. When the project was first announced on March 20, producers said Jem is being reimagined "for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age." Ryan Landels wrote the script, which, per the producers, centers on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt -- one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father. The production has been encouraging fan involvement through every step of the process, taking fan submissions for roles in the film and showing off fan-made art on its Tumblr. (See the first official art for the film below.) Peeples, who will star as Jem (aka as Jerrica), has shown off her musical skills by starring on the ABC show Nashville as Layla Grant. Her career so far has mostly been in TV, with roles on Grey's Anatomy and Necessary Roughness. She's repped by Abrams Artists Agency and Snow Entertainment. Scott is best known for her role on the Disney Channel's A.N.T. Farm. She's repped by Gersh and More/Medavoy Management. Perrineau, repped by APA, Freeze Frame Entertainment and Manatt, Phelps and Phillips, is a relative newcomer. She appeared on an episode of ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars and and was in the film A House Is Not a Home. Kiyoko appeared on ABC Family's The Fosters, and her past work includes roles on Wizards of Waverly Place and The Vampire Diaries. She has an upcoming role in the indie Hello, My Name Is Frank and is repped by AKA Talent Agency, Principato-Young Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein.

www.deadline.com/2014/05/jem-and-the-holograms-movie-juliette-lewis/The live-action Jem And The Holograms movie is getting a little more truly outrageous with the addition of Oscar-nominated actress and rocker Juliette Lewis. Production is already underway in Los Angeles on the music-driven film, based on Hasbro’s 1980s animated series about a young woman who transforms into a pop star with the help of her besties and a pair of high-tech earrings. Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) is directing the modern Jem for Universal and the main cast has been set, with Aubrey Peeples as Starlight Music owner/manager Jerrica Benton aka Jem, Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Aurora Perrineau as Shana, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja, and Ryan Guzman as Rio. Plot of the Universal pic sends online music sensation Jem and her Holograms on a musical adventure across Los Angeles. Lewis’s supporting role is being kept under wraps, so fans can speculate away on who she’ll play. Suffice it to say Lewis has singing chops and rock star experience, having fronted her band Juliette and the Licks until 2009 before going solo. jemAside from the main Holograms band members, the supporting cast has yet to be revealed, including who will play Jem’s omnipresent AI fairy godmother/holographic computer Synergy. Lewis appeared in last year’s Oscar-nominated August: Osage County and stars on ABC’s new midseason series Secrets & Lies opposite Ryan Phillippe. She’ll also be seen in upcoming indies Kelly & Cal and Hellion. Jem And The Holograms is produced by Chu, microbudget maestro Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun for his SB Projects, Hasbro’s Brian Goldner, Hasbro Studios’ Stephen Davis, and Bennett Schneir. Ryan Landels wrote the script. Universal and Hasbro are jointly backing the film, which Uni will distribute worldwide. Lewis is repped by United Talent Agency and Untitled Entertainment.
