‘C.B. Strike’ Gets Summer Premiere Date On Cinemax
Cinemax continues its rebrand as a destination for fun, mostly action-packed, original programming, setting a premiere date for its miniseries C.B. Strike. The actioner based on Harry Potter author J.K. Rowlings’ crime novels — who wrote them under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith — will attack at 10 PM Friday, June 1, on the premium cabler.
It stars Tom Burke as Cormoran Strike, a war veteran-turned-private detective, who operates out of a tiny office in London’s Denmark Street. Although wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as a military police investigator prove crucial in solving three complex cases that have baffled the police. Holliday Grainger also stars.
The series originally was pegged for sister outlet HBO, but Kary Antholis, president of HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming, and HBO programming chief decided last year that the show “would have a greater impact” on Cinemax, Antholis said at the time. “We’re looking for opportunities to broaden our audience [on Cinemax] and appeal to viewers besides the kind of core adrenaline-action oriented viewer, and we had an opportunity with C.B. Strike — it’s a very appealing, entertaining kind of whodunit show.”
C.B. Strike will launch with three hourlong episodes based on the first book in the trilogy, The Cuckoo’s Calling, followed by adaptations of the two other books, The Silkworm and Career of Evil, both of which will consist of two one-hour episodes.
Produced in association with BBC, C.B. Strike — which aired as Strike in the UK — is a Bronte Film and Television production. Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and Rowling exec produce all the episodes, with Ben Richards also EP-ing on The Cuckoo’s Calling and Tom Edge joining as an EP on Career of Evil and The Silkworm.
