With X-MEN & FF Disney-Bound, Where Does This Leave The 11 Movies & Three TV Shows Fox Developed?
The Walt Disney Company has acquired 21st Century Fox's film and television assets (pending stockholder and regulator approval), so where does that leave their plans for the X-Men and Fantastic Four? Fox has made 13 films based on those franchises since they acquired the rights in 1994, but have 11 upcoming films in various stages of development - not to mention projects for television.
With ink on the Disney/Fox deal still drying, Newsarama has more questions than answers - but here's a rundown of what's in development.
On the movie side, filming is complete on all 2018 projects (New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix). The beleaguered Gambit film was expected to begin filming in early 2018 under veteran Disney director Gore Verbinski for a February 14, 2019 release, but while unlikely at this stage, this deal could potentially affect that.
In addition to that, seven films are reportedly in active development: X-Force, X-23, a third Deadpool film, two New Mutants sequels, James Franco's Multiple Man, as well as a Doctor Doom movie by Legion showrunner Noah Hawley. All told, Fox had six theatrical release dates reserved for unspecified Marvel films (as outlined in our Full Comic Book Movie Schedule): June 7, 2019; November 22, 2019; March 13, 2020; June 20, 2020; October 2, 2020; and March 5, 2021.
The prospective future for some of these projects could potentially be in doubt depending on Disney strategy. However, given X-Men: Dark Phoenix writer/director Simon Kinberg's long-time work as a producer for both Fox's X-Men films and Disney's Star Wars films, a bridge to ease transition may already be in place.
In 2017, Fox revived the dormant TV side of the X-Men equation with Legion. A second season of Legion is anticipated for 2018, while The Gifted's first season is expected to run through early 2018. The latter show has not been renewed for a second season. Additionally, a Deadpool animated series remains in development for FXX in 2018.
