Van Toffler's Gunpowder & Sky Inks Distribution Deal With YouTube Red
The studio will bring such YouTube Red originals as 'Escape the Night' and 'Lazer Team' to audiences who don't subscribe to the streaming service.
YouTube is bringing its slate of early original series to new viewers through a distribution deal with Gunpowder & Sky, the studio founded by Van Toffler and Floris Bauer.
Gunpowder & Sky has inked a multi-territory distribution deal with YouTube for nine films and television series that originated on Red, YouTube's $10-per-month streaming service. The pact gives Gunpowder & Sky worldwide rights to distribute the projects outside of Red, including on linear television, pay television, transactional and EST, home video and subscription video platforms.
Among the titles that the studio will bring to these new platforms are Joey Graceffa reality series Escape the Night and Liza Koshy-fronted Jingle Ballin'. Gunpowder & Sky previously distributed Lilly Singh documentary A Trip to Unicorn Island and sci-fi comedy film Lazer Team.
"We are proud to be partnering with such a forward-thinking team at YouTube, and excited to help bring their quality content to even more audiences around the world," said Janet Brown, executive vp distribution at Gundpowder & Sky. "YouTube's mission fully aligns with our mission to create diverse breakthrough content and take risks with new models for how to release and market the content — whether via TVOD/SVOD platforms, TV or AVOD."
Red launched in late 2015 and is currently available in five territories, including the U.S., Australia and Mexico. The streamer plans to expand into more markets, including France, Germany and England, in 2018.
YouTube will release nearly 40 originals this year, among them Eva Gutowski starrer Me and My Grandma and e-sports-centric Good Game. The world's largest streaming service has also begun producing ad-supported originals such as Demi Lovato's Simply Complicated and competition series Best.Cover.Ever. that are available to its 1.5 billion users.
Oct. 5, 12:52 p.m. Corrected to reflect that Gunpowder & Sky previously distributed A Trip to Unicorn Island and Lazer Team.
