Gaumont, the studio behind streaming hit “Narcos,” has signed a first-look TV deal with Oscar-nominated screenwriter, director and producer J.C. Chandor, whose credits include “Margin Call,” “All Is Lost” and “A Most Violent Year.”
Announced on Tuesday by Gene Stein, the president of Gaumont’s U.S. television unit, the pact involves Chandor’s production company, CounterNarrative, and his producing partners, Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb. Under the deal, Chandor will write, produce and direct projects.
“J.C. Chandor is the complete package – a brilliantly talented screenwriter, director and producer, who is ideally suited to partner with Gaumont on the development of multiple drama series for both traditional and streaming distribution platforms,” Stein said.
Chandor, who earned an Oscar nomination for the script of “Margin Call” (which he also directed), is already working with his partners and Gaumont on multiple TV projects.
“As we looked to expand our storytelling into the new horizons available in television, my producers and I could not have found more perfect partners,” Chandor said, describing Stein’s team as “bold, creative risk-takers who are able to build on the institutional foundation of the oldest film production company in the world.”
Gaumont is currently in pre-production on Season 4 of “Narcos,” the award-winning, Emmy-nominated series on Netflix. Chandor’s next project – directing feature film “Triple Frontier” – is also for the streaming giant.
At CounterNarrative, Chandor, Dodson and Gerb have been developing a dozen films and TV projects, including “The Liar’s Ball” with Gideon Yago, which is set up at A24; a remake of German film “The Robber” with “It” screenwriter Chase Palmer, which is set up at FilmNation; and an untitled project about female Yazidi soldiers, with writer-director Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, for Amazon Studios. CounterNarrative is also developing Palmer’s directing debut, “Black Lung.”
Gaumont’s alliance with Chandor is part of the French company’s commitment to the development and production of scripted dramas for the U.S. market. Gaumont also recently inked a first-look deal with Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie and his wife and producing partner, Heather McQuarrie.
