Toronto: Netflix Nabs Tragically Hip Concert Doc 'Long Time Running' (Exclusive)
The film about the Canadian band's last concert after frontman Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal cancer debuts at TIFF on Wednesday night.
Netflix has taken the world streaming rights to the Tragically Hip's concert documentary, Long Time Running, excluding Canada.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The feature documentary, originally commissioned by Bell Media, chronicles the lead-up and the final concert for the Canadian band in Kingston, Ont., after frontman Gord Downie‘s terminal brain cancer diagnosis.
The film, by directors Jennifer Baichwal and Nick de Pencier, includes interviews with Downie, his brother Patrick, bandmates Paul Langlois, Rob Baker, Johnnie Fay and Gord Sinclair, and managers and key crew.
The final Tragically Hip concert, broadcast live, was watched by 11.7 million Canadians, the second-largest audience in Canadian TV history. Downie first revealed his cancer diagnosis in May 2016, having battled the disease since December 2015.
Not long after, the band launched a final concert tour to accompany its studio album, Man Machine Poem.
Long Time Running is produced by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of Banger Films, in association with Shed Creative, and is distributed by Elevation Pictures. Executive producers are Bernie Breen, Patrick Sambrook, McFadyen, Dunn, Randy Lennox, Jeffrey Remedios, Dave Harris, Naveen Prasad and Jeremy Smith.
Netflix is set to start streaming the documentary outside of Canada on Nov. 26.
