A24 and DirecTV have scooped up distribution rights to Backstabbing for Beginners, starring Theo James and Ben Kingsley. The political thriller, based on a true story, is an adaptation of the best-selling 2008 memoir by Michael Soussan about an idealistic young United Nations worker who gets embroiled in corruption, fraud and corporate malfeasance when he starts working on a covert mission in Iraq. The film, now in postproduction, also stars Jacqueline Bisset. It's directed by Danish helmer Per Fly, with a script by Per Fly and Daniel Pyne. Lars Knudsen, Daniel Bekerman, Malene Blenkov and Nikolaj Vibe Michelsen produced the film, which was financed by Houndstooth, Hoylake Capital and the Danish Film Institute. UTA Independent Film Group negotiated the deal on behalf of the filmmakers. A24, which released best picture Oscar-winner Moonlight, most recently acquired The Florida Project out of Cannes. The New York-based company has had its pact to acquire films with DirecTV since 2013. Films released through the partnership include Dark Places with Charlize Theron, Slow West starring Michael Fassbender and The Blackcoat's Daughter with Emma Roberts.
