Universal Mulling 'Fate of the Furious' Spinoff With Dwayne Johnson
Johnson and Jason Statham established a crowd-pleasing chemistry in the eighth installment of the franchise.
The Fast & Furious world is getting a little bigger.
After a year of contemplating ways to expand the massive franchise, Universal is in early talks to have writer Chris Morgan pen a spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
Shaw (Statham) and Hobbs (Johnson) went from mortal enemies to genuine pals in this month's The Fate of the Furious, where they established crowd-pleasing onscreen chemistry.
Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment in the Fast series, had the biggest global launch of all time last weekend and has taken in more than $685 million to date. The main franchise is expected to run for two more films, with Fate kicking off what star Vin Diesel has described as a new trilogy. Universal has dated a ninth installment for 2019 and a tenth for 2021.
Johnson has been a part of the franchise since 2011's Fast Five, and Statham's character made a brief debut in 2013's Fast & Furious 6 before becoming the chief bad guy in 2015's Furious 7.
Sources say that Johnson and Statham's onscreen chemistry inspired Universal to shoot plenty of extra footage with the duo, which may end up surfacing in DVD bonus material.
Johnson is easily one of Hollywood's busiest stars, with an impossibly long list of project in various stages of production. His packed schedule includes Disney's Jungle Cruise, a Rampage movie and a Black Adam DC feature. He will next be seen in the Baywatch movie next month and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in December.
Statham is next set for Warner Bros.' monster movie Meg.
Universal declined to comment.
