China-Connected Firm Tang Media Partners Acquires Chaotic Good Studios
Tang Media Partners, which counts a number of powerful Chinese companies among its strategic investors, bought Stuart Ford's film financing and distribution venture IM Global last summer.
Growing Los Angeles-based entertainment company Tang Media Partners has acquired Luke Ryan's content developer Chaotic Good Studios for an undisclosed sum.
The announcement was made Wednesday by TMP chairman and CEO, Donald Tang. Ryan has been appointed to the newly created position of chief creative officer at Tang Media Partners and will stay on as Chaotic Good's CEO.
Chaotic Good is best known for its proprietary Fanalytics service, which provides data to film, TV and gaming studios about audience engagement and behavior.
TMP made a minority investment in Chaotic Goods last spring to help launch their Franchise Lab, a writers program set up to design original franchises. According to the two companies, the Franchise Lab will become a primary content pipeline for TMP, delivering a minimum of 25 original franchises per year across a range of genres.
Founded in 2015 by Tang, a former chairman and CEO of Bear Stearns Asia, TMP is positioning itself as an ambitious operator of film and television content businesses, with an emphasis on forging connections between China and international markets. While headquartered in LA, the company has an office in Shanghai and counts an impressive array of Chinese backers and associates, including the investment firm China Media Capital, leading studio Huayi Brothers and internet giant Tencent.
The company made its first big international splash in summer 2016, when it acquired majority ownership of IM Global, the Los Angeles film financing, production and foreign sales outfit led by former Miramax exec Stuart Ford. The deal marked the first time an entity with such deep ties to the Chinese industry has come to control a major foreign sales and film finance company.
"Chaotic Good Studios has unique and visionary methods of creative development and audience analytics that feed into our greater vision for the evolution of content design across industries," said Tang in a statement. "Luke and his team play an integral role in a future where film and television development will employ technology to find deeper insights into audience behavior and create numerous access points for storyworlds across media platforms.”
"Donald is one of the most trusted and well-respected entrepreneurs at the intersection of Hollywood and China and it is a privilege for our team to become a part of the TMP family," added Ryan. "In addition to injecting significant growth capital into our original content business, the deal bolsters our access into China to forge revolutionary data partnerships and create entertainment that transcends borders and platforms.”
