Antoine Fuqua is no longer directing Universal’s Scarface remake. The helmer, who has been on board the project since last summer, has stepped off in order to focus on a sequel to 2014’s The Equalizer, which is on the fast track at Sony Pictures, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Fuqua directed the first Equalizer movie, which starred Denzel Washington, and has spent considerable time developing a follow-up. Both movie projects came to a head in terms of scheduling, forcing Fuqua to make a Solomon-like decision. Universal is still planning on a spring start for Scarface and is on the hunt for a director. Diego Luna, the male lead of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is attached to star in the modern story about the rise and fall of a Latino gangster in Los Angeles. Previous versions of the crime drama include the 1932 original starring James Cagney and a 1983 remake starring Al Pacino.

The studio had already RSVP’ed the date under untitled event film. The Coen brothers are rewriting this take on Scarface. It’s a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production, produced by Marc Shmuger (Lucy), Scott Stuber (Ted) and Dylan Clark (Planet Of The Apes series). Martin Bregman, who produced the 1983 film, serves in the same capacity in the telling of this generation’s gangster pic, which Uni first brought to the screen in 1932. Currently, Scarface is the only major studio release on that summer weekend.
