Sundance: Doc about 'Psycho's' Shower Scene Goes to IFC Midnight
'78-52' examines Alfred Hitchock's notorious horror sequence.
The documentary 78-52 has been acquired by IFC Midnight.
78-52 is an in-depth examination of shower scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, which required 78 setups and has 52 cuts.
The shot-for-shot breakdown comes from writer-director Alexandre O. Philippe, who interviewed filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, Bret Easton Ellis and Karyn Kusama about the lasting impact of the sequence that pushed the boundaries of chaste American filmmaking.
"It's a great honor to be partnering with IFC Films and working closely with them to bring 78/52 to horror and documentary fans across the U.S.," Philippe said in a statement. "Their love of smart genre cinema shines through in everything they do, and 78/52 will undoubtedly flourish with their savvy, forward-thinking support. Our team is very excited about this partnership."
"78/52 is a thrilling piece of work about one of the greatest films ever made. Alexandre Philippe has made a film that captures why all of us have become obsessed not only with PSYCHO but cinema itself. We are excited to work with the entire team to get this film out to the world," said Jonathan Sehring and Lisa Schwartz, co-presidents of IFC Films/Sundance Selects.
Kerry Deignan Roy produced the doc, which was executive porduced by Felix Gill, Joey Porcelli and Randy Pharo.
78-52 premiered in Sundance's Midnight section, which is reserved for horror and similar genre fare.
