'HIGHLANDER' SERIES TURNS BACK TIME In Prequel Series From IDW Publishing Posted by Betsy Gomez on November 15, 2016 @ 6:39 pm CT
IDW has announced a comic book prequel miniseries to the epic 1986 Highlander movie that starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery, proving that the Highlander brand is as immortal as its titular character.
The miniseries will be written by Scottish fantasy author Brian Ruckley (The Godless World trilogy) and illustrated by Andrea Mutti (Rebels). It will examine the events leading up to the first Highlander film, focusing on Lambert’s Connor MacLeod and bringing in fan-favorite characters from the franchise. The series will launch in February.
The Highlander franchise has been as enduring as its beloved central characters, spawning five movies, a six-season television series staring Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod, a short-lived television spinoff, an animated series and movie, a Japanese animated film and collectible card game, audio dramas, several novels, and a comic book series published by Dynamite Entertainment (see “'Highlander' #0 in July”).
A Highlander movie reboot has been in the works for several years. At one point, Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, Star Trek Beyond) and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) were attached to direct and Ryan Reynolds was set to star, but all left for other projects. Director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (The Huntsman: Winter’s War) is currently attached to the reboot.
