RUMOR: BEN AFFLECK’S BATMAN MOVIE MAY HAVE MAJOR SCRIPT PROBLEMS
by Anthony Couto
If a new rumor surrounding the upcoming solo “Batman” film is to be believed, Warner Bros. will continue to have trouble convincing fans it can churn out good stories for its DC Comics-based films.
“American Psycho” author Bret Easton Ellis (via The Ringer) says he’s been told from Hollywood executives that the Ben Affleck-led Batman outing has some serious script troubles — and Warner Bros. doesn’t care.
In a recent interview, Ellis said he was having dinner with filmmakers that took a look at the troubled “Batman” script — and offered the executives behind the film to fix its issues — only to be turned down.
Here’s Ellis’ account:
“I was having dinner with a couple of executives who know other executives who are working on the [forthcoming] Batman movie, The Batman. And they were just telling me that there are serious problems with the script. And that the executives I was having dinner with were complaining about people who work on the Batman movie. And they just said they went to the studio and they said, ‘Look, the script is … Here’s 30 things that are wrong with it that we can fix.’ And [the executives] said, ‘We don’t care. We don’t really care. The amount of money we’re going to make globally, I mean 70 percent of our audience is not going to be seeing this in English. And it doesn’t really matter, these things that you’re bringing up about the flaws of the script.’ So I do think global concerns play a big part in how movies, and what movies, are being made, obviously.”
Of course, this rumor has to be taken with a grain of salt — it’s third-hand story, after all — but it does fall in line with Warner Bros.’ prior issues with films like “Batman v Superman” and “Suicide Squad,” which were both critically panned for their weak scripts.
Considering the calibre of filmmakers working on the project — including DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and the Oscar-winning Affleck — this rumor does come as quite the surprise, though it should be kept in mind that, again, this is a third-party account, and it’s still early in the film’s development.
Reportedly directed by Ben Affleck, written by Geoff Johns, and starring Affleck, Jeremy Irons (Alfred), J.K. Simmons (Commissioner Gordon) and Joe Manganiello (Deathstroke), the solo “Batman” film hasn’t been given a release date.
