AFM: Mark Wahlberg's 'Six Billion Dollar Man' Leads TWC-Dimension's Slimmed Slate
"Looking in the past, I was producing seven or eight films a year. The quality suffered, and so did the results," he told AFM buyers in his brief introduction.
Bob Weinstein appeared to have stolen a page from the studio playbook as he outlined his vision for a new-look TWC-Dimension on Wednesday at the American Film Market.
Fewer films but splashier, more franchise-focused fare was the general takeaway in his presentation to international buyers at the Casa del Mar.
"Looking in the past, I was producing seven or eight films a year. The quality suffered, and so did the results," he told buyers in his brief introduction. "Going forward, I have decided to bring productions to three or four at the most. I've decided to make them bigger-budgeted, actor- and star-driven, but still with the idea of creating franchises of a bigger nature."
True to his word, the biggest star-driven title from the banner's upcoming slate was the first to be showcased: Mark Wahlberg giving his Six Billion Dollar Man reboot an onstage robotic fist bump.
Similarly, the high-concept horror title Polaroid; the kids-friendly comedy The War With Grandpa; and Furby, the latest toy-to-film adaptation from Transformers owners Hasbro were touted to international distributors.
"They are betting that these kinds of films are the only ones that will work internationally," said Timm Oberwelland, managing director at Germany's Tobis Film. "Some of it looks promising, especially Six Billion Dollar Man. But it's still too early to tell."
