UFC COST-CUTTING MEASURES CONTINUE WITH 13 FIGHTERS RELEASED
BY PAUL FONTAINE | @paulacefontaine | OCT 22, 2016 7:29 AM
13 UFC fighters have been released from their contracts as parent company WME-IMG continues to cut costs, first reported by MMAFighting.com.
The biggest name in the bunch is former heavyweight title challenger Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. Silva has a 19-10 pro record but has just one win in his last 7 fights dating back to 2013. He had suffered brutal KO losses in 5 of his last 6 fights and was one of the biggest casualties of the TRT ban.
The releases come during a week where the company has laid off a significant amount of staff at their various offices.
The rest of the list:
- Shane Campbell (10-6): The Canadian fighter had a 1-4 UFC record and lost his last three fights, most recently by 1st round KO in August.
- Kevin Casey (9-5-1): The son-in-law of the late Muhammad Ali was winless in his last four UFC fights and had just a 1-3-1 record in UFC with two no contests. He was last KOd in the 2nd round by Sam Alvey in August.
- Cody East (12-3): He came in as a highly touted prospect but lost both of his UFC fights, including a 2nd round KO at the hands of Curtis Blaydes earlier this month.
- Glaico Franca (13-5): The TUF 4 Brazil lightweight winner had lost both of his fights since winning that tournament. He lost by decision to Gregor Gillespie in his last fight in late-September.
- Leonardo Guimaraes (11-3): He lost both of his UFC fights, most recently via 3rd round submission to Antonio Carlos Junior in mid-September.
- Cory Hendricks (3-1): The TUF 23 competitor lost his only UFC fight via a lopsided decision to Josh Stansbury in early-July.
- Caio Magalhaes (9-3): He was 4-3 in the UFC but lost each of his last two fights.
- Enrique Marin (8-4): The TUF Latin America 2 welterweight finalist lost both of his UFC fights.
- Tamdan McCrory (14-5): He returned to UFC after a six year absence, scoring a 3rd round submission win over the late Josh Samman. Since then, he lost two in a row.
- Kenny Robertson (15-5): He had a 4-5 UFC record but each of his last 2 losses were via split decision. He had a three fight win streak prior to that.
- Sean Spencer (12-6): He lost his last 3 fights and had an overall record of 3-5 in UFC
- Alberto Uda (10-2): He lost each of his two UFC fights via stoppage after coming in with an undefeated record.
