FilmRise Nabs “SEOUL STATION”; Shudder Gets U.S. Rights for “GRUDGE”/”RING” Crossover
In recent years, it feels that Asian horror cinema has certainly become less present as the marketplace has changed into the day-and-date model. Whereas Japanese and Korean cinema once were the darlings of the video store era, there hasn’t been many runaway critical or commercial highlights making a splash among U.S. horror fans as of late. However, with the Korean zombie epic TRAIN TO BUSAN currently carving out a name for itself critically and commercially around the world, it seems Asian horror is set to make a comeback in a big way, with a pair of recent updates offering two chances for U.S. horror fans to check out some exciting fright fare from East Asia.
First up, TRAIN TO BUSAN’s animated prequel, SEOUL STATION, has found a home in North America via FilmRise, the distributor behind the upcoming gonzo horror comedy THE GREASY STRANGLER. After racking up acclaim at both the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival and Fantasia International this past summer, Yeon Sang-ho’s film recently opened in Korea, although there’s no release date in the U.S. as of yet. In any case, stay tuned for more on SEOUL STATION, which will hopefully be reaching American shores sooner rather than later.
However, for fans of J-Horror, the horror-centric streaming service Shudder has announced they’re getting into the distribution game with the highly-anticipated THE RING/THE GRUDGE crossover title SADAKO VS. KAYAKO. Following a girl who aims to negate her RING curse by staying in the haunted house from THE GRUDGE, thus pitting the demonic forces against one another, Koji Shiraishi’s fright flick will host it’s North American premiere at Toronto International Film Festival this Fall. The film aims to hits audiences in a multi-platform release, with exclusive streaming rights belonging to Shudder, in late 2016.
