‘Newtown’ Doc Acquired For Theatrical Distribution Via Abramorama
Abramorama just acquired the U.S. theatrical rights to Kim A. Snyder’s documentary Newtown which was produced by Maria Cuomo Cole and features testimonies about the aftermath of the Dec. 14, 2012 school shooting which took the lives of 20 children and six educators. The project was produced by ITVS. The Orchard will handle TV, excluding PBS, and all home entertainment in North America. The deal comes after they were invited to show the film before Congress on July 13.
Abramorama will open the film in theaters on October 7th and then it will air on PBS in early 2017.
A number of documentaries about gun violence were produced in the past year, including Under the Gun from Katie Couric (which came under controversy over editing/journalistic methods used within the film) as well as Robert Greenwald’s straight-forward Making a Killing: Guns, Greed and the NRA, which examines the motivating factor of money behind the NRA and the gun manufacturers they represent juxtaposed with stories from gun violence victims. Making a Killing one was executive produced by Bill and Laurie Berenson (Beasts of No Nation). It has yet to be acquired but is one of the better ones out there.
Newtown premiered to critical raves at the Sundance Film Festival and will make its New York festival premiere this month at the BAMCinemaFest.
The deal was negotiated by Richard Abramowitz, CEO of Abramorama, with Karol Martesko-Fenster of Thought Engine and Danielle DiGiacomo, VP of Acquisitions for The Orchard with Preferred Content and WME Global on behalf of the filmmakers.
