Daniel Bruhl Boards Weinstein's 'Mafiya' Series
The 10-part series is set around the fall of the Soviet Union in 1990s Moscow.
Recent Marvel hire Daniel Bruhl has added a major international TV project to his growing list of credentials.
The German actor revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in Cannes that he has signed up for Mafiya, an upcoming series set around the fall of the Soviet Union that is being financed and distributed by The Weinstein Co. and ITV Studios.
"Yeah, I’m signed up," Bruhl said at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association reception. "It’s a such a great, great story."
The 10-part series, written by William Nicholson (Gladiator, Shadowlands, Les Miserables) and produced by Archery Pictures, the U.K. banner founded by industry veterans Kris Thykier and Liza Marshall, will bring to screen the power vacuum of 1990s Moscow, when criminal gangs and private armies clashed over wealth and control.
The show will follow a character called Mischa — who Bruhl is expected to play — who goes from street trader to become one of the richest and powerful individuals in the country.
Production was initially set to start earlier this year. “It was supposed to be this year, but I now think it’ll be next,” Bruhl said.
The prolific actor has a bunch of film projects in the pipelines. Alone in Berlin, which bowed in Berlin, is still selling internationally, while The Zookeeper's Wife and the all-star sci-fi God Particle, being produced by J.J. Abrams, are in the works. Bruhl has also also become a partner at Berlin-based production banner Amusement Park Film, which was behind A Most Wanted Man.
