Season 2 will be exclusive to the new digital streaming service.
"Firefly" pals Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion have found a new home for their crowd-funded web series "Con Man." The new streaming service Comic-Con HQ, a joint venture between Lionsgate and Comic-Con International, has picked up the show and ordered a second season.
Previously produced episodes of "Con Man" will appear on Comic-Con HQ starting next month, and the series' second season will premiere later this year. Comic-Con HQ actually launches this Saturday in beta mode.
Author P.J. Haarsma is also behind "Con Man" with Tudyk and Fillion. The project was funded by more than 46,000 fans, who raised $3.2 million on the crowdfunding site Indiegogo. "Con Man" is about the stars of a canceled sci-fi TV series, and is loosely based on the post-"Firefly" careers of both Tudyk and Fillion. Tudyk plays Wray Nerely, who winds up on the sci-fi convention circuit while looking for his next big break, while Fillion's character, Jack Moore, goes on to become an A-list celeb.
Per Lionsgate, season 2 will focus on "Wray’s attempt to propel himself from B-movie sci-fi actor to esteemed mainstream leading man, while maintaining the respect of his fans, former co-stars and Jack in the process."
Last year, the Comic-Con panel (moderated by Chris Hardwick) for "Con Man" was held in the massive Hall H ballroom--a first for a web series. Indiewire's Liz Shannon Miller covered the panel and wrote at the time: "Tudyk's take on conventions is full of oddballs and awkward encounters, revealing a life that might seem glamorous until you lead it. But on stage at Hall H, Tudyk seemed almost moved to tears by the standing ovation he received when walking in."
More: "It was easily a moment of triumph for Tudyk as a creator, who, per Hardwick, came up with the idea for the series while sitting at Fillion's kitchen table. The decision to pursue 'Con Man' got Tudyk fired by his agents because he wanted to focus on the series instead of going out for roles during pilot season. But choosing to go an independent route made sure the project felt inclusive to fan culture."
Season 1 guest stars included Tricia Helfer ("Battlestar Galactica"), Amy Acker ("Angel"), Gina Torres ("Firefly"), Felicia Day ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Seth Green ("Robot Chicken"), Jewel Staite ("Firefly"), Summer Glau ("Firefly"), Sean Astin ("Lord of the Rings") and even "Firefly"/"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" mastermind Joss Whedon.
