‘The Family Fang’ & ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ Top Mixed Weekend: Specialty Box Office
Starz Digital gave an exclusive one-theater run to The Family Fang, Jason Bateman’s second feature directorial, starring Christopher Walken, Nicole Kidman, Kathryn Hahn and Bateman himself over the weekend. The title had a decent start ahead of its expansion into 40 markets and VOD this coming week. Fang bit off the weekend’s highest per theater average among the Specialty newcomers, edging out IFC Films’ The Man Who Knew Infinity starring Jeremy Irons and Dev Patel, which played a half dozen locations. Opening wider was the self-distributed Papa Hemingway In Cuba, which had a few hundred runs but averaged just above fifteen hundred dollars. Focus World’s Term Life, meanwhile, cut short its existence with a measly $260 PTA in 50 theaters. SPC’s The Meddler with Susan Sarandon added locations in its second week, holding solid, while Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate/Saban’s A Hologram For The King starring Tom Hanks also expanded with decent results. And Juliette Binoche starrer L’Attesa from Oscilloscope grossed $6,250 in a pair of locations.
With Bateman behind and in front of the camera for The Family Fang, Starz Digital opened the Tribeca Film Festival title exclusively at the Angelika theater in New York Friday ahead of a wider release this coming week. Fang had the highest PTA among all reporting titles as of early Sunday afternoon, snatching $15,285 over the weekend, placing its average just behind Bateman’s first feature Bad Words. Focus Features opened that title in March 2014 in six theaters grossing over $113K for an $18,884 PTA. Bad Words went on to cume over $7.77M. Still, Fang topped reporting Specialty openers this weekend.
“It’s a good grown-up movie, which is evident in the theaters we’re playing,” said Starz Digital’s Ryan Heller earlier this week. “We’ll have a quick VOD window, which will help us grab a broader audience for the movie.” Starz will take the film to about another 40 markets, reading about 50 by May 13. The feature will be available via on-demand platforms beginning May 6.
IFC Films’ The Man Who Knew Infinity followed closely with a $14,689 PTA (the weekend’s second-best overall) in its initial run in six locations. Starring Dev Patel as the Indian-born self-taught mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan who began an unlikely friendship with an eccentric professor (played by Jeremy Irons) at Cambridge University in 1913 grossed $88,134. “The movie plays great,” said IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring at the film’s NYC premiere Wednesday night. “It’s an audience movie with two major stars and one who is up and coming. Jeremy Irons is art house catnip…” IFC Films said Sunday that the film “played to several sold out shows” in the New York and Boston markets. The film expands to the the top ten markets this coming weekend, building word of mouth for an aggressive expansion to the top 50 markets opening mid May.
Papa Hemingway In Cuba bowed in 325 theaters with a comparatively slower start, albeit with far more runs. Self-released by Yari Film Group, which produced the feature that takes a look at the famous author’s life when he lived in Cuba at the looming of revolution. Papa grossed $491,200, averaging $1,511. Numbers for the weekend’s other Cuban-set feature, Viva, from Magnolia Pictures were not given as of early Sunday afternoon.
Averaging better was Oscilloscope’s Juliette Binoche starrer L’Attesa (The Wait), bowing at two theaters. The feature, directed by Piero Messina (Paolo Sorrentino’s assistant director on the Oscar-winning The Great Beauty), grossed $6,250 for a $3,125 average. “It’s a very striking piece of filmmaking,” said Oscilloscope exec Andrew Carlin. “Piero Messina is a protege of Paulo Sorrentino…which is obvious when you see the film…The film encapsulates what we want to see when we go to the movies.” L’Attesa will head to the Bay Area next Friday before heading to the top 20-25 cities in mid to late May.
Opening with a whisper was Focus World’s Term Life, starring Jon Favreau. The feature did not get any coattail action from Favreau’s much more successful Jungle Book. Term Life grossed $13K in 50 theaters, giving it a paltry $260 PTA.
Pantelion/Lionsgate’s Compadres dropped over 50% in its second frame as it remained in 368 theaters. Friday to Sunday, the feature is estimated to have grossed $650K, averaging $1,766. Last week, the feature debuted with a $1.35M gross, averaging $3,668 in the same number of locations. Its two week cume is over $2.39M.
Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate/Saban’s A Hologram For The King dropped only 18% in its second weekend with an additional 122 runs over its debut. Starring Tom Hanks, the feature grossed $931,600, averaging $1,791 giving it a cume of over $2.55M.
Sony Classics’ The Meddler also held well in its second weekend expansion. Starring Susan Sarandon and J.K. Simmons, the feature grossed $174,369, giving it a $7,265 average. Last weekend, the film grossed over $60K in its initial four theater run, averaging just over $15K. Slower in its second week was Elvis & Nixon, which grossed $198,696 in 310 theaters, giving it a $640 average. The Bleecker Street title’s two week cume is nearly $884K.
The Weinstein Company’s Sing Street, which got a shout-out from U2 frontman Bono this week, played an additional 79 theaters in its third frame, grossing $330K for a $3,173 PTA. Last week, it averaged $5,316 ($132,901 gross) from 25 theaters. Its three-week cume is just under $589K.
A24 added 440 theaters for thriller Green Room‘s third weekend. The film grossed $960K, averaging $2,042. The company said the title had a “strong holdover in existing theaters” and a solid Friday to Saturday increase, which are “both rare for the genre.” Green Room’s cume is now over $1.35M.
In its 12th weekend, Menemsha Films took Dough, directed by John Goldschmidt nationally following a nearly 3 month exclusive run in Florida locations. Dough grossed $113,200 in 33 theaters, averaging $3,430. Menemsha said the title had a 68% Friday to Saturday increase.
Paramount’s Everybody Wants Some!! by Richard Linklater should cross $3 million in the coming week. Over the weekend, the title grossed $360K in 442 theaters, averaging $814. And Open Road’s Best Picture Oscar-winner Spotlight will likely pass $45 million this week. Friday to Sunday, the title grossed $88,128, averaging $392 giving it a $44,980,632 cume.
