MipTV News: Alexander Siddig Joins ‘Kennedys’ Sequel, MGM Shops ‘Generation Gap’
“Game of Thrones“ trouper Alexander Siddig has signed on to play Aristotle Onassis in “The Kennedys — After Camelot.”
Muse Entertainment’s four-hour miniseries, starring Katie Holmes as Jacqueline Kennedy and Matthew Perry as Ted Kennedy, is slated to bow in spring 2017 on Reelz Channel. Siddig takes on the role of the Greek shipping tycoon who married Jackie Kennedy in 1968 in the follow-up to 2011’s eight-hour “The Kennedys” miniseries. Muse is shopping international rights to “After Camelot” this week at the MipTV conference that begins today in Cannes.
Separately, Reelz has picked up U.S. rights to the docu series “The Real Story” from the U.K.‘s World Media Rights. The six episode series will tell the stories behind real events that inspired high-profile movies, including “Unbroken,” “American Sniper,” “Munich” and “Donnie Brasco.” ITV is distributing “Real Story” outside of the U.S.
All3Media and Rumpus Media are shopping episodes and format rights to a new unscripted comedy series starring Barry Humphries (aka Dame Edna), “An OAP’s Guide to Modern Life.” The three-part series takes a comedic look at how seniors (aka Old Age Pensioners) in Britain are navigating the modern era. The partners also shopping “An Immigrant’s Guide to Britain.” Both are set to air on Channel 4.
The U.K.’s Zig Zag Productions has locked up sales with the U.K.’s Quest and France’s RMC Decouverte for its reality series “British Treasure, American Gold.” The series features Jesse McClure of Syfy’s “Storage Hunters” shopping for antiques in the U.K. and trying to sell them for a profit at his family’s antique shop in Los Angeles. Zig Zag has retained rights for the show in the U.S.
MGM is shopping 19 series and formats, including game show “Generation Gap,” a quiz show that challenges contestants of different generations; and “Coupled,” a dating show that unfolds via text messages.
Scripps Networks Interactive is fielding 40 titles in the cooking, home and travel arena at this year’s confab. New entries include “Chopped Junior,” “Guy and Hunter’s European Vacation,” featuring Guy Fieri and his son Hunter; “Valerie’s Home Cooking,” featuring Valerie Bertinelli; and “Patricia Heaton Parties.”
Italy’s RAI heads to the Croisette with a slew of drama series, miniseries and movies. Notable projects include “Luisa Spagnoli,” a mini about the 1920s female entrepreneur who defied the odds, and “Tango for Freedom,” about the 1976 military coup in Argentina and a tango singer’s fight for justice.
