variety.com/2016/film/news/jake-johnson-tom-cruise-mummy-1201725364/ Jake Johnson Joins Tom Cruise in ‘The Mummy’ Reboot After fighting off dinosaurs for Universal in last year’s “Jurassic World,” Jake Johnson is looking to return to the studio to fight a new kind of monster, this time with Tom Cruise by his side. Sources confirmed to Variety that the “New Girl” actor is in talks to join the cast of Universal’s reboot of “The Mummy.” Annabelle Wallis and Sofia Boutella are also on board. Johnson will play a member of the military in the pic. The film is set to bow on June 9, 2017. The studio tapped Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan last summer to help develop a monster universe for Universal with rebooted versions of classic monster movies. Kurtzman is also on board to direct, and will produce alongside Morgan and Sean Daniel. Jon Spaihts is penning the script. Plot details are vague other than the fact that the pic will be set in the present day, unlike the previous three installments starring Brendan Fraser. Universal’s Executive VP of Production Jon Mone and VP of Development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio. Johnson can still be seen on “New Girl,” which celebrates its 100th episode Tuesday. He is repped by UTA and 3 Arts. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.

icv2.com/articles/news/view/34425/universal-unveils-the-mummy-plotUNIVERSAL UNVEILS 'THE MUMMY' PLOT Also Russell Crowe Cast Posted by Nicole Bunge on May 6, 2016 @ 1:21 pm CT Universal Studios released a plot synopsis for its reboot of The Mummy, just after confirming Russell Crowe would join the cast. Crowe will join the Tom Cruise-led cast as a Dr. Jekyll-like role, Deadline reported earlier this week. Sofia Boutella will portray the title character. Alex Kurtzman is directing what is intended to be the first in an interconnected classic monster movie franchise. Universal shared this plot synopsis: Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of “Kingsman: The Secret Service” and “Star Trek Beyond”) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. The film will release on June 9, 2017.
