variety.com/2016/film/news/batman-v-superman-r-rating-directors-cut-1201714130/ ‘Batman v Superman’ Gets R-Rated DVD Director’s Cut “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is going even darker for the DVD. A director’s cut of the upcoming superhero movie received an R rating from the MPAA, according to a bulletin released Wednesday by the Classification and Ratings Administration. The cut, titled the “Ultimate Edition,” differs from the PG-13 version set for release March 25. The “Ultimate Edition” will have a Blu-ray release when the film hits the home market, showcasing extended sequences of violence – the reason for the new rating. Director Zack Snyder is no stranger to releasing harsher Blu-ray versions of his films. Snyder’s adaptation of “Watchmen” was released to the home market with a more grisly version than the one that opened in theaters in 2009. “Dawn of Justice” is not the first superhero film this year to shy away from PG-13 content. The record-breaking action film “Deadpool,” starring Ryan Reynolds as the title character, featured strong violence and language throughout. Despite its R rating, the Merc with a Mouth earned a stunning $152.2 million in the movie’s opening Presidents’ Day weekend. “Wolverine” (2013) received an unrated Blu-ray release as well. “Man of Steel,” the 2013 Superman film, was packed with fight scenes and received a PG-13 rating — so audiences can expect more destruction and blow-swapping between the two superhero giants, played by Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, when the film is released on Blu-ray.
