The Shanghai-based film company is co-financing Pablo Larrain’s 'Jackie' and will distribute Mel Gibson's 'Hacksaw Ridge' in China.
China’s Bliss Media has acquired a stake in Insiders, the international sales outfit launched at the Cannes film festival last year by Wild Bunch and Cine France.
Based in Shanghai and Los Angeles, Bliss Media is a finance, production and distribution company. It is co-financing Pablo Larrain’s Jackie starring Natalie Portman and Michael Mann’s Enzo Ferrari, which Paramount Pictures acquired for U.S. distribution. Insiders, headed by Wild Bunch CEO Vincent Maraval, is selling the international rights to the two projects.
The two companies will deepen their collaboration under the new deal. Insiders will handle the international sales rights for all of the films financed and produced by Bliss Media, which will include both English-language and Chinese titles. Insiders says the partnership will help Chinese productions reach a wider international audience — something that the Chinese industry and government regulators covet but have yet to achieve. The capital infusion should also help Insiders acquire and sell top titles.
“This furthers our goal of becoming a Chinese film company with the ability to distribute globally," Wei Han, managing director and CEO of Bliss Media. "Our interest in Insiders will strengthen the alliance of Bliss Media in the international film industry, as we seek cooperation and expansion in markets outside of China.”
Bliss Media recently partnered with YooZoo Pictures, the film subsidiary of Chinese gaming company Youzu Interactive, to launch the $100 million YooZoo Bliss Film Fund, with the intention of financing ten international and Chinese co-productions over the next five years.
CAA brokered the deal on behalf of Bliss Media and Insiders.
Along with Jackie and Enzo Ferrari, Insiders is now selling Sean Penn’s Flag Day and Jeff Nichols Loving starring Joel Edgerton and Michael Shannon. Bliss Media recently acquired the Chinese distribution rights to the Mel Gibson's upcoming war drama Hacksaw Ridge.
