Fox is reteaming with Mark Burnett for an unscripted dating series to air later this year. The untitled project, co-created and executive produced by Burnett, marks the first dating series for the prolific reality producer behind such hits like The Voice, Survivor, Shark Tank and Celebrity Apprentice.
The series, which has received a 10-episode order, puts the notion of instant attraction to the test. Set in the Caribbean Islands, it features single men and women. After face-to-face meetings, a participant picks a mate based on instant chemistry. “The real soap opera will unfold when these budding couples discover whether or not they have the compatibility to make their relationships last,” Fox says.
“I am so happy to be making my first dating series with Fox,” said Burnett, who previously co-created and executive produced the game show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader for Fox. “It’s a genre that attracts a wide audience and our series gives a very fresh perspective that mirrors real life.”
ABC’s The Bachelor has been the dominant player in the reality dating series genre spoofed in Lifetime’s scripted series UnReal. There have been a handful of other notable entries in the space, including Fox’s headline-making Who Wants To Marry A Multi-Millionaire and Average Joe, A&E’s Married At First Sight and NBC’s upcoming First Dates.
The Fox dating show also marks the first series order for MGM Television since Emmy winner Burnett was named president last month. It is created and executive produced by Burnett, Ben Newmark, Dan Newmark and Larry Barron. MGM Television and Grandma’s House Entertainment produce, with MGM serving as the worldwide distributor of the series outside of the U.S. and Canada.
