The film, which has only been on release for 22 days, has today overtaken “Skyfall’s” £103.2 million ($150 million) gross in the British Isles. Earlier this week, the movie became the second in history to reach £100 million ($145 million) in the U.K. and Ireland, which is handled as a single territory by most distributors. The result came after just 20 days of business, compared with the 66 days “Skyfall” took to reach the same amount. Globally, the movie has already made $1.59 billion worldwide and this week became the biggest release at the U.S. box office, overtaking “Avatar.” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” broke a number of records on its release on Dec. 17, including the biggest-ever U.K./Ireland opening weekend, the biggest-ever opening worldwide, widest release of a title in the U.K./Ireland, highest advance bookings of all time and the first film to reach £50 million ($72.6 million) within a week. The film also had the biggest-ever single day at the box office with £9.7 million ($14.1 million). The movie also entered the awards race today when BAFTA announced that the film had been nominated for four awards: original music, production design, sound and special visual effects.
