Eugenio Derbez to Helm and Star in ‘Ponce’
Lionsgate-Televisa joint venture Pantelion and 3Pas Studios, the Santa Monica-based film and TV shingle co-owned by Mexican helmer-thesp Eugenio Derbez and former Pantelion prexy Ben Odell, have acquired spec script “Ponce” from scribe Max Botkin (“What Happened to Monday?”) for Derbez to helm and co-star.
Set in modern-day America, dramedy turns on Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon and his legendary quest for the fountain of youth.
“Max is a wonderful writer and this script captures everything I love in movies — humor, heart, whimsicality and deep human emotions, all rolled up into one. I can’t wait to sink my teeth in this,” said Derbez.
“The script is in very good shape so it could very well be Eugenio’s next directing gig,” said Odell, noting that there is a big role for a female lead.
Derbez previously announced plans to direct the remake of Argentine hit “Cuento Chino.” The remake screenplay is currently on its third draft.
Derbez and Odell will produce “Ponce” under 3Pas Studios’ first look deal with Lionsgate and Pantelion. Botkin will executive produce.
It has been a busy first year for the fledgling shingle, which inked a first-look deal with Lionsgate/Pantelion in August, 2014, after the studio released Derbez’s breakout hit “Instructions Not Included,” the highest-grossing Spanish-language pic ever released in the U.S., earning $99 million worldwide.
Derbez will next star in “How to Be a Latin Lover,” which 3Pas Studios will produce under its Lionsgate/Pantelion deal. Ken Marino is attached to direct. “Latin Lover” is expected to start shooting in March in Vancouver, L.A. and Mexico, said Odell.
3Pas Studios’ first year has been marked by the acquisition of notable properties, including remake rights to French comedy “The Valet” and “Cuento Chino,” and a partnership with Nascar to develop a comedy feature.
In November, 3Pas Studios unveiled a first-look deal with Universal TV and promptly sold its first two English-language comedies. ABC picked up the shingle’s single-camera comedy “Don’t Judge Me,” which is inspired by Derbez’s life story, while NBC picked up “The Great Brown Hope,” a single-camera comedy created by Isaac Gonzalez (“Bordertown”).
