Noah Baumbach’s ‘Mistress America’ Bows OK In Mostly Slow Weekend: Specialty B.O.
Fox Searchlight’s Mistress America topped out a mostly lackluster weekend for new Specialty releases reporting numbers Sunday as a crowded field of studio releases overpowered the limited release newcomers. Mistress America is Noah Baumbach’s second title of the year, bowing in the shadow of his previous 2015 release, While We’re Young. Also debuting with decent numbers was Sundance audience-award winner Meru in 7 theaters, while other weekend newcomers Paulette, People Places Things and Rosenwald had mixed to slow roll outs. Focus World expanded Cop Car in its second weekend, though the day and date release remained flat in theaters, while Sony Classics’ Sundance title The Diary Of A Teenage Girl held OK after adding locations in its second frame.
Mistress America, starring Greta Gerwig, grossed $94K in 4 theaters, averaging $23,500. In late March, A24 released Baumbach’s While We’re Young, starring more established names like Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts and Adam Driver, grossing $227,688 in four theaters, averaging $56,922. It went on to nearly $7.59M. While We’re Young even edged out Baumbach’s previous top-grossing film, The Squid And The Whale (2005), which cumed $7.37M and received an Oscar nomination for original screenplay. Still, Mistress America‘s opening trails Baumbach’s previous Gerwig starrer, Frances Ha, which IFC Films released in May 2013. That feature grossed $137,398 in 4 theaters, averaging $34,350. It went on to cume over $4M.
Searchlight expects Mistress to gain momentum as it continues to roll out in the coming weeks. Said the distributor’s SVP of distribution Frank Rodriguez Sunday when reporting numbers: “We are very encouraged by this promising opening and are expecting to continue to draw the core Noah Baumbach audience as well as attracting both mainstream and arthouse [and] specialty moviegoers as we roll out across North America.” Fox Searchlight will add six new markets next week while expanding slowly in New York and Los Angeles bringing the number of locations to between 30 and 35 by August 21. “We expect to be in nearly 350 theaters by our national release on September 4,” added Rodriguez.
Music Box Films opened Sundance ’15 U.S. competition doc Meru in 7 theaters Friday. The feature by E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (who is also one of the film’s subjects) grossed a fairly solid $98K, averaging $14K overall from its initial New York, L.A., Seattle, Minneapolis, Denver and Boulder showings. Music Box’s Ed Arentz said the company was, “pleased with the performance overall, particularly [from] the younger demographic” for the film which features mesmerizing cinematography from one of the world’s most difficult mountain climbs. Music Box will add locations in the Bay Area, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, San Diego and Atlanta next week.
In other openers, Cohen Media Group rolled out two titles this past week. The company bowed the re-release of Night Of The Shooting Stars (1982), grossing $4,684 in a single location and $6,456 since Wednesday. The company also opened French crime comedy Paulette in a single location, grossing $8,142.
The Film Arcade opened Sundance ’15 title People Places Things by James C. Strouse in a fairly hefty 19 theaters considering it’s a day and date release. It grossed $31,262, averaging a slow $1,645 on the big screen. The company will add several more locations in the coming weeks including Denver, Kansas City, San Diego and Austin.
And Rosenwald, a film that spotlights a “partnership between the African American and Jewish communities,” featuring civil rights hero Julian Bond, who passed away this weekend, opened at New York’s Sunshine Theater via the Ciesla Foundation grossing $6K. It will next open markets including Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston over the next two weekends while adding tri-state area expansion, before rolling out to markets across the country in the autumn. Director Aviva Kempner will be traveling extensively with the film as it rolls out further.
Focus World added 57 locations for its day and date release Cop Car in its second weekend. The title starring Kevin Bacon grossed just $50K in 60 theaters, averaging $833, though a distributor spokesperson noted the feature is in the top ten on iTunes and they “anticipate a strong digital run for the title.” Cop Car has cumed $85,339 in two weeks.
SPC’s The Diary Of A Teenage Girl grossed $112,387 in 22 theaters (up from 4 last week), averaging $5,109. Its opening weekend, the Sundance ’15 title grossed $54,525, averaging $13,631. The feature will continue to expand into September. GKIDS’ animated feature Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet grossed $30,901 in 10 theaters, averaging $3,090, a sizable slide from its opening $13,300 average last week in 2 theaters.
Showtime Documentary Films added 11 additional locations for documentary Listen To Me Marlon‘s third frame. The title grossed just over $38K in 22 theaters, averaging $1,729. Presenting the screen legend in his own words, the feature averaged $3,899 last weekend from 11 runs. It has now cumed $170,733. A24 added 97 locations for its The End Of The Tour starring Jesse Eisenberg. It grossed $399K in 133 locations, averaging $3K. Tour averaged just over $7K last weekend from three-dozen runs. The film has now cumed $937,663 and will easily top $1M this week.
In its fourth weekend, Sundance Selects added 26 runs for Phoenix from the previous weekend. The title grossed nearly $199K, averaging $3,750. The distributor noted Phoenix is currently 99 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and is “holding strong.” Phoenix will continue its platform release into another ten markets this coming weekend.
Woody Allen’s Irrational Man shed 500 theaters in its fifth weekend, grossing $435,891 for a $1,025 screen average. The title will likely not mirror last summer’s Magic In The Moonlight at the box office, which totaled over $10.5M domestically. In its fifth weekend, that title had cleared $6.7M. Irrational Man has totaled $3,114,661 since opening July 17.
